It's Métis Week here in Alberta! Did you know that the neighbourhood we now call Mission was once a French settlement? Special thanks to Métis Nation of Alberta - Region 3 for this post talking about Rouleauville and the Métis families who lived there. https://www.facebook.com/MetisNationOfAlbertaRegion3/posts/1940189416115493

It's Métis Week in Alberta! Fort Calgary has close ties with Métis history and heritage in this area. This week, we will share a few resources our team has created to highlight Métis peoples. #MetisWeekAB For more information about happenings throughout the province, please visit: http://albertametis.com/about/news/events/metis-week/ We thought you might enjoy this video by Rosie who shares about being a young Métis person and what that means to her and her family. If you’re interested in learning even more about Métis identity and history, feel free to reach out to Fort Calgary and we’d be happy to help. https://www.facebook.com/nctr.ca/videos/665559731065749/

If you haven't already, please subscribe and follow The Squeaky Wheel Podcast: hosted by Lawrence Gervais, President of MNA Region 3, and Ross Pambrun. Here's their latest episode in the series! -----... The opinions expressed in these are those of the individual hosts and guests. They do not necessarily reflect the views of Fort Calgary National Historic Site or the Fort Calgary Preservation Society. These Speaker Series deal with challenging topics that are important to talk about, but some listeners may find the subject matter particularly difficult, especially discussions of colonial violence. We encourage you to take care of yourself while listening, and will share resources on how you can learn more about these topics here: Calgary Foundations Indigenous Ally Toolkit: https://calgaryfoundation.org//st/indigenous-ally-toolkit/ CommunityWise Resource Centre's AROC Resources: http://communitywise.net/aroc/ Michelle Nahanee's "Decolonize First" guide: https://www.decolonizingpractices.org

"I love Saskatoon berries. I love the way that they taste, the way their flowers smell, and how they always seem to pop up when I am not looking for them. Saskatoon’s were the first plant that I developed a kinship with." Read more: https://www.fortcalgary.com//prairie-berries-saskatoons-co

Today, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, we take time to remember all who served. We remember those who lost their lives and those who live with the effects - physical and mental - of having served. We share gratitude for their service and honour them. We have hosted services in the past, but COVID-19 means we cannot safely get together this year. Reverend Larry Nicolay kindly took time to talk with Programs Officer Allison Graham about his history with the RCMP and Fort Calgary and shares a Remembrance Day address. https://www.fortcalgary.com/remembranceday

Clothing Pieces Here we have some textile items that came from an officer’s uniform. They were found during the 1970 excavations. Textiles typically deteriorate and decompose much faster underground than other materials, like metal, making these items very special! The long pieces are braids from a jacket collar (seen on this full uniform) and the smaller pieces are possibly from the top of an officer’s pill box hat, like the one seen here. These are very delicate and handle...d with extreme care! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ffQWw72SEg (Pith Helmet information at 46:25-46:55) ***** The site of Fort Calgary has been the subject of many archaeological digs over the decades. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, archaeological excavations were undertaken on the site to uncover the architectural plans of the two Forts built on this site, in 1875 and in 1888. There were also excavations in 1975, 1976, 1981, and into the 1990s. Many of the fascinating items found during these excavations are very delicate today because they were underground for over 100 years! In honour of Heritage Day and Historic Calgary Week, we are bringing some of these amazing finds to you!
