Undercurrent 30 X 40 Acrylic & Gesso on canvas Simple Definition of undercurrent : a flow of water that moves below the surface of the ocean or a river... : a hidden feeling or tendency that is usually different from the one that is easy to see or understand I started this painting with the intentions of creating a Geometric Abstract with vertical movements of plate’s crossing over a horizontal divider. I also wanted to try my hand at incorporating gold leaf into this painting. While lying down my underpainting, the Kio fish suddenly became visible to me. Now torn between which subject to paint, I had to come to a choice. The gold leaf would be an excellent medium to incorporate into the Kio or should I stick with my original concept? I choose to go with the Kio. Since music plays a great roll in my painting process I search the internet for peaceful music of Japan.. I came across a version of the Braveheart theme that was featured only Chinese Flute and Piano. Upon listing to it I immediately began to see the movements and what I wanted to accomplish with this painting. The two inspirations would coexist together to create two strong movements. The Kio fish would create an undercurrent of a graceful free flowing circular movement. The geometric shapes above it would provide a lateral and vertical movement. beneath this the tail of the Kio release as it were pockets of air that rise above the plates and expand into larger curricular shapes within the plates themselves. Thus the title Undercurrent was the perfect fit.
