For #blackhistorymonth, we're taking a look at how this promotional pamphlet is connected to the Laurier government’s 1911 Order in Council to ban Black Americans from immigrating to Canada. Between 1908 and 1911, approximately 1000 Black pioneers came to Alberta seeking refuge from racial violence in their home state of Oklahoma, and for the opportunities of prosperity promised in Canadian Immigration advertisements. In 1911, the Fort Saskatchewan Board of Trade published t...he pamphlet Fort Saskatchewan and District Offers Opportunities to All, to promote settlement in the Fort Saskatchewan area. While the Board of Trade promised Opportunities for All, they endorsed the Edmonton Board of Trade’s petition to Prime Minister Laurier to prohibit Black immigration to Canada. Did you know Fort Saskatchewan had a bobsled run in the 1930s? Starting in 1935, locals in the Fort and Lamoureax built six-person bobsleds and raced them across the North Saskatchewan River at speeds up to 70 mph. Despite the fast speeds, the sleds couldn't make it all the way up the opposite embankment, so sledders had to dismount and pull the sled to the top before heading back to the other side (you can see sledders pulling their sleds up the hill in the photo below and... in Reg Turner's 1997 portrait of the bobsled run). In 1937, the Town shut the bobsled run down, citing safety concerns. The run had become quite the tourist draw and visitors supposedly couldn't handle the high speeds. Where's your favourite place to sled or toboggan in the Fort? #fortsaskatchewan #bobsled #sledding #albertacanada #yeg #history #heritage #canada #winterfun
