CAR BUYING TIPS I just wanted to share some tips for any one thinking about a new ride. I've heard countless horror stories from clients over the years about different types of loans or different stipulations that were put on their contracts, during purchasing a vehicle at a car dealer. I do not represent a car dealer that plays games like that and I want to help anybody who's willing to take 3 minutes to read, learn how to avoid this kind of oversight. ... 1. Have a down payment. NO you don't NEED a down payment, but putting 10-20% down will help secure you the best financing rates available, as well as give you freedom to sell the vehicle at any time and not have negative equity. 2. Pay attention to more than just your monthly or bi-weekly payment quotes. Car dealers like to manipulate the numbers to make them reflect what you want, while avoiding telling you all they did was lengthen term or switch it to a lease. 3. Know your dealer, shop local, and have somebody you can trust at the dealership where you're considering buying. That way after the sale you have somebody to go back to if you have any issues with the length of the term of the contract as it had been miss stated or even if you have an issue with the vehicle you bought not being 100% mechanically sound. If you're going to buy out of town, understand the risks. 4. Be careful shopping around. There are a lot of deals out there to be had, but some car dealers will check your credit without your permission and too many checks in a short period of time on one person's credit can hinder their ability to be approved for an auto loan all together. Take the time to do the research and find out what you want and what you can afford and how your credit looks to a bank or lender, before you walk in and say get me approved. 5. Start looking around three months in advance prior to the time when you need to buy a new vehicle. There's nothing worse than making an Impulse decision because your vehicle has broke down or you have an unexpected repair you cannot afford. It's great having a ride with no payments but eventually breakdowns and maintenance can add up to a much higher cost long-term.
