What an INCREDIBLE experience this has been! Participating (for the first time) in Toastmasters International Speech Competition - I feel like I have so much to... sayI’m warning you now For the past six weeks I have been FULLY ENGROSSED in the process of building my hearts message into the very best speech possible and learning the skills that would allow me to present it in the best way possible. Each level of the competition requiring more and more from me in order to continue building and advancing with the level of speakers I would share the stage with. The way that this presentation has evolved, in such a short period of time, has been nothing short of amazing to me! Yesterday, I showed my whole heart and shared a deeply personal message of personal growth and was awarded with a 2nd Place Finish in the District 99 International Speech Contest!! This morning, as I reflect on the journey that this speech and I have been on together, I am feeling both incredibly proud and deeply grateful. I would like to thank the many many people who have helped me, supported my development and watered the Seeds of passion for this message. First and foremost, I must thank my fellow Forward Thinkers Toastmasters. You all have been so incredibly patient - listening to every one of the 734 iterations of this speech, providing your valued feedback, such kind and encouraging private messages and supporting me every single step of the way! On an individual basis - I have appreciation for each and every one of you. Collectively - I am overwhelmed - Best Club Ever! Also, to two other amazing area clubs - Fort Saskatchewan Toastmasters Club and Bowmen Toastmasters, for offering me the lectern at your meeting and to speak to your membership. Your thoughtful & helpful feedback was incredibly helpful - every comment very much appreciated! Special thanks to Russ Dantu and Marc Haines for your valued time and attention to help this new girl on the block. The quality and detail of your feedback was incredibly exciting and inspiring to me - showing me how I could develop and polish this even more! Much respect and appreciation to you both! I learned so much! Collin Greene, mentor extraordinaire! Your wisdom, experience, coaching, guidance, time, attention and bottomless support have meant more to me than I could ever express. I poured my whole heart into this process and you matched me every single step of the way. Thank you, thank you, thank you - a million times I thank you! (I’m suddenly feeling like an Academy Award Recipient and the music has started playing please know, all of this comes from a VERY grateful heart! ) To my family and friends who have followed along with me on this journey - for knowing how deeply invested I was in this message and taking it as far as I could. Your belief in me fuels that passion. It’s a strange paradox when you find that what lights your heart on fire is the very thing you’ve been afraid of your whole life. Last but always first - Steve. My love, my best friend and my person. You’ve witnessed (and helped) me wrestle with my doubts, fears and Gladys for 32 years. I thank you for always believing in me, the power of this message and reminding me to speak from my heart - to the one who may find freedom inside. This morning feels a bit like Boxing Day. After all the time, energy, effort and focus to prepare for one day. It makes me sad to think that this journey (with these stories) has come to an end. Seeds will always be near and dear to me, but she has had her turn. She has taken me where I needed to go and I look forward to whatever steps come next. New challenges, new beginnings, same message we hold the seeds to our own happiness and it’s up to each of us to plant them, nurture them and water them. If what we want is more courage in our lives, we must stop watering the seeds of fear and self doubt. It’s available to each one of us, but WE need to GROW in the direction of our dreams. Before I put the final period on this very long thank you note, I wish to Congratulate everyone who competed (at every level). You have all inspired me and pushed me and I look forward to meeting you all in person one day. In the meantime, I am grateful to have crossed paths with you and I wish you every success going forward. To District 99 - So many involved to host an annual conference of this magnitude (and online) I wish to specifically thank those who directly contributed to the contest event - Contest Chair Erin Finucane, Toastmaster Peter Helten, Chief Judge Michael Pucylo and the many organizers, volunteers and officials - truly an amazing event!! Be proud, what a team!! Susan Glover - I send my sincerest best wishes to you for the next level of competition - You Go Girl! We’re all rooting for you!
