Have you ever wondered why we love seeing kids at Foundation Chiropractic Co.? Before you learned about the benefits of NeuroStructural Correction, you may have thought to yourself I wonder how they know if that baby has back pain or not. But now you know that chiropractic is much more than just relief for back pain. Chiropractic’s goal is optimal body function (whether that body is 1 day old or 99 years old!) and it promotes optimal body function by removing blockages in t...he nervous system. For over a century, children all over the world have visited their local chiropractor to regain and retain their health. Research shows that chiropractic can help with colic, sleep problems, torticollis and promoting proper spinal alignment as a child grows. Chiropractic adjustments for children are very gentle and very precise. In fact, a baby’s first chiropractic adjustment is often performed while the baby is sleeping and the doctor utilizes the same firmness that one might use to check if a tomato is ripe. All children, especially if they are experiencing an illness, need bodies that are free of blockages to the flow of sensory information from his or her nervous system. Dr. Jennifer is certified by the Academy Council of Chiropractic Paediatrics and is happy to help your child reach optimal health through chiropractic care. References: 1. Gutman G. The Secret Behind New Year’s Resolutions It’s no secret that New Year’s Resolutions are hard to keep all year long but if you want to make a resolution that you’ll actually keep this year, then follow these steps: 1. Be specific! If you say things like lose weight or exercise more or spend more time with family, your resolution will likely fail. While I’m sure your intentions are good, the more specific you make your resolution, the higher your chances of sticking with... it. An example would be I want to do yoga for 30 minutes a day, 4 days a week, and that’s an excellent starting point. 2. Make it measurable! If your goal is to lose weight, then how much weight do you want to lose? And when do you want to lose it by? If you’re reaching for the stars and want to lose 30 or 40 or 50 pounds, then start by making smaller mini goals to help get you there. 3. Have fun! If you don’t enjoy what you’re doing and you aren’t having fun, then chances are you won’t stick with it. If you want to eat healthier, then find some fun recipes to make. If you want to exercise more, then consider joining rec sport leagues or working out over zoom with your friends. Make your resolution a challenge, but make it fun. Here at Foundation Chiropractic Co., we want to support you as much as possible. If your resolution involves getting healthy, living a more natural lifestyle, or getting some great chiropractic care, then we are the place for you! If your resolution is to build a rocket ship to the moon so you can see the world, then you’re on your own (but please take us with you).

Another year older - thanks to everyone who reached out yesterday! After seeing a few of my friends do this exercise recently, I decided to do the same and share what I know as I become another year wiser. I wrote this out mainly for my own self-reflection, but if others can take something from it then that's an added bonus. Here it goes: Everything is just a reflection of ourself. When we judge others or something, we are simply judging ourself. I know this.... Comparison is the thief of joy. Don't compare yourself to others. Success comes easy when you act with integrity, work hard, and do what you love. Love comes in abundance. The more we give the more we can receive and VICE VERSA. A rising tide lifts all boats. Our thoughts shape our actions. Think positive, and be the most positive and enthusiastic person you know. Losing yourself in the service of others doesn’t have to look like humanitarian work. It’s a daily intention and it provides us with the gift of liberation from self. Our inner wisdom is everything. Listen to your innate intelligence and trust your gut. Be brave. Whatever that means to you. Yourself on the other side of bravery will thank you. Take care of your body, specifically your spine. It's the only place you have to live and you only get one. Health is not linear. Like all good things in life, optimizing health takes time and repetition. Movement is life. Stagnant energy creates patterns that are hard to break. Our body is designed to move and movement heals. Fall in love with you. This inspires others to seek self love, which is what we all need and desire. Adventure. Explore. Imagine. Seek new sights and experiences. Follow that excitement...often. Cherish the sweet moments. Don’t worry that it’s fleeting, stay in the moment for as long as you can. Mentally capture it so you can revisit it whenever you want. We don’t always have to learn through hardships and challenges. Learning through love and grace is a thing and an option available to everyone. Be kind and gentle to others and to yourself. Hold yourself to a high standard but understand there will be moments when you can't meet it. The only constant in life is change. Everything is in seasons. Diets, relationships, phases, etc. It’s all temporary and serves a purpose. Don't take yourself too damn seriously. Leave time for fun. Relax. Breathe. The KISS theory is real. Keep it simple, stupid. Live simply. Giving up on something doesn't mean you've failed. It’s so exhausting holding it all together. There are times when it's ok to just let go and learn from it. Finally, always be humble, have a grateful heart, and appreciate what you have and who you have in your life. Yours in health, -Dr. Jason

5 years ago today Dr. Jennifer graduated from LIFE University in Atlanta, Georgia. LIFE University has a pretty cool tradition where any chiropractors in the family are encouraged to walk across the stage with the graduate as they accept their degree. Dr. Jason was honoured to walk across the stage with his little sister! Time sure does fly when you are having fun! We have been operating as Foundation Chiropractic Co. for the last 4.5 years, first as a team of two, Agatha jo...ined our team in 2017 and then Dr. Shamira and Krista joined us in August of this year. We hope that we will continue to grow in the future so that we can always offer you the best patient experience possible. We can’t say enough about the amount of love and support that we have received from our community. Thank you to everyone who has helped us grow, placed your trust in us, and supported us (especially during 2020). We love and appreciate all of you!

Thank you for sharing this awesome google review #testimonialtuesday I recently started my treatment plan with Dr.Jennifer after seeing the amazing results my husband has had over the last year of going to her business partner/and brother Dr Jason. I was really anxious to see a chiropractor as I prefer a gentle approach to my well being, but Dr Jennifer eased my worries within the first visit.... Their approach is much different than I expected, and they use advanced technology to assess your spine health so they can truly get to the bottom of your ailment. They do assessments along the way to see how well your body is responding to treatment & are always helpful in offering up further advice such as stretches or diet changes to really promote optimal health. Dr Jennifer is super gentle, and both herself & Dr Jason are extremely knowledgable in their field and have a genuine approach to their clients/business. From the moment you step into the doors of Foundation Chiropractic Oakville, you will be impressed with their professional business practises, friendly front desk staff & their passion for your health. I have seen incredible results in 3 short months & I feel confident referring my loved ones to such an awesome team of professionals who truly care about you & your health. -Andrea S.

LONG POST ALERT:::::: *****WHAT ARE PRIMITIVE REFLEXES AND HOW DO THEY IMPACT MY CHILD'S HEALTH***** Primitive reflexes are reflex actions originating in your child’s central nervous system that are exhibited by normal infants in response to particular stimuli. They are pre-programmed into our nervous systems to help us survive and thrive in particular situations. For example, the rooting reflex is present to help infants know to turn their cheek towards food when it is feed...ing time to help ensure successful breastfeeding. There are more than 10 primitive reflexes that a child is born with. They should only remain active for the first few months of life however, sometimes they can be retained, meaning they remain active for a lot longer. Retention of primitive reflexes can be caused by a variety of factors. The birth process is a key factor in the integration and processing of these reflexes. A traumatic birth (a birth with excessive twisting and pulling, a birth using forceps or vacuum extraction or a c-section) may lead to retained reflexes. Additional causes of retained reflexes in children include poor posture, falls, lack of tummy time, delayed or skipping crawling, chronic ear infections, or stress on the child’s spinal column which surrounds their nervous system. Retained primitive reflexes in children can lead to development delays, sensory processing disorders, and bedwetting. If the reflex remains retained into the teenage years and adulthood, they can contribute to issues in coordination, sensory perception, energy levels, impulse control, concentration, emotional learning and intellectual learning. Our paediatric examination includes testing of the following primitive reflexes: Rooting Reflex Spinal Gallant Reflex Palmer Grasp Plantar Reflex Asymmetric Tonic Neck Reflex (ATNR) Moro Reflex Landau Reflex Aside from offering paediatric adjustments, Dr. Jennifer and Dr. Shamira will educate parents on primitive reflex remediation exercises, an integral part of your child’s recovery. Thanks to @fromtheheartimagery for these cute little toes!

Check out this amazing healing story #testimonialtuesday I’m a mother of two and been having back pains for years. I went for an MRI and CT scan and was told I have a herniated disc. I was put on medication and felt relief for a little while, but then the pain re-emerged. For 2 years I was in and out of the clinic getting medication for the pain, saw a physiotherapist and a chiropractor nothing worked. I saw my cousin at a barbecue who noticed I couldn’t really move around a...sked me what was going on. I explained the situation, he then told me about Foundation Chiropractic. I was sceptical and told him that I had already done that and it didn’t work but he said go there, do the exam, do 3-4 adjustments if it doesn’t work I will give you your money back. Based on that level of confidence I said ok, I did the exam and did my first adjustment and I immediately felt pain relief. For the first time in weeks I could walk straight. To date, I have done 4 adjustments and it’s so good to be able to bend over and tie my shoes for myself. Dr Shamira is a miracle worker. - Tina S. See more

As baby-wearing is becoming more and more popular, there is no doubt that you have seen someone wearing their baby and wondered if this is a new fashion trend or if this fad really does hold benefits for the baby (and the caregiver too). When comparing baby-wearing with carrying babies in a car seat, the car seat just doesn't stack up. Baby wearing offers so many health benefits to both caregiver and baby: improved emotional connection between caregiver and baby, lowered a...nxiety levels in the baby, improved regulation of baby body temperature to facilitate antibody formation to fight off illness, and facilitated position for breast feeding. But, from a chiropractic point of view (you knew we’d go there didn’t you) the reasons why baby-wearing are so important go all the way down to the structural level of the spine. Structurally, your newborn baby’s spine is in the shape of a big C. Your baby’s posture is completely flexed, just as her posture was inside the womb. As your baby’s postural muscles get stronger, they will be able to hold her head up and your baby will develop her proper curve in her neck (along with daily tummy time). As your baby begins to move and crawl around, she will develop the proper curve in her low back. These curves develop over her first year of life and this proper spinal structure is very important to ensure proper development of the spinal cord and nervous system. When babies are properly worn by their parents, they are in a better biomechanical position for spinal and muscular development- while the baby is being worn, gravity will assist in the development of proper muscle tone. In contrast, when babies lie flat on their backs in their car seat for an extended period of time, their spine begins to straighten, rather than develop those three very important curves. Putting your baby in a car seat for car rides will not have a detrimental effect on your child’s spinal development, however, it is recommended that once you park your car, you should leave the car seat in the car, strap on a carrier and wear your child! Dr. Jennifer was gentle, without fuss or tussle, She examined the vertebrae and relaxed every muscle. She spotted the trouble and with a click, She started aligning the spine of St. Nick. In no time at all, he felt healthy again, He picked up his pack, and fastened it then. The air was a tingle with new fallen snow. And healthy Kris Kringle was rarin’ to go. Torticollis is also known as wry neck. The latin definition of torticollis is twisted neck so, in other words, in torticollis the neck tends to twist to one side causing a head tilt. Along with the head tilt comes an inability to return the head to a resting position, a feeling of pinched nerves, an inability to breast feed in young children, and pain. If this condition is left unresolved in young children it can lead to malformation of the baby’s face and skull due to ab...normal pressure distribution when the baby is laying on their back. Torticollis is most commonly known to happen in children (although it can happen in adults from medication or trauma), especially if their birth involved a lot of forceful twisting or pulling. If complications during the birthing process arise and the birth is particularly traumatic damage can occur to the sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM), a muscle that connects the base of the skull (mastoid) to the shoulder bone (clavicle) and controls movement of the neck. This trauma usually causes the SCM to go into spasm causing a head tilt, trouble breastfeeding and one fussy baby. In children, a common treatment of torticollis is surgery to cut the SCM at its origin near the clavicle. This treatment is invasive and has many long term side effects. At Foundation Chiropractic Co. we offer a less invasive approach. Our primary focus is ensuring that the bones of the neck (vertebrae) are in proper alignment, especially after a traumatic birth. This is important because the nerve that controls movement of the SCM originates from the base of the brain and travels down the neck. When the bones of the neck are misaligned it can put pressure on the nerve and cause spasm of the SCM, pain, and lack of motion. To ensure the bones of the neck are in the correct position our paediatric chiropractor will check the child’s spine and, if needed, perform a very gentle chiropractic adjustment.

The International Scoliosis Research Center has determined that 85% of all scoliosis cases are caused by trauma (blow / fall) to the pelvic mechanism (buttocks / hips) in the developing years when we are aged 5-10 with ongoing postural adaptation determining the extent of progression. This means that all the slips and injuries we sustained as children have a negative effect on our underlying spine structure. Sometimes we’ll have pain or other symptoms that show up right away,... but most times it goes undetected until later in life. Concerned about your spinal alignment or the alignment of your child’s spine? We do a comprehensive exam including digital X-ray analysis when necessary to accurately locate and assess any underlying shifts that may be present in the spine. The sooner you identify these problems, the easier they are to address and the less time they’ve had to progress and manifest in the body.

What’s the best way to regain and maintain proper posture? The key is to remember that it all starts from the INSIDE - OUT. Start with the inside, the frame, the foundation, and then work your way out. Just like the building contractor who starts with a solid frame and level foundation, you must restore normal spinal structure (your frame and your foundation) BEFORE you worry about weak muscles or tight fascia. What would happen if a contractor build big, beautiful walls on... an uneven foundation? That’s right, over time they’d crack or collapse. So thinking along those same lines, what do you think would happen if you work to strengthen your muscles without having proper spinal alignment. It should make sense that it may not be as effective and may even lead to further muscle imbalance. So while we do recommend a strengthening and stretching routine to maximize performance, it will not be nearly as effective and may even result in further imbalance if you do not have a stable frame to support the rest of your body. The bones in your spine should stack one on top of the other, no different than a stack of blocks. If for whatever reason one or more of those segments shifts, it leads to instability and premature wear and tear. Let us show you how to develop and maintain normal spinal structure so that you perform optimally and maintain muscle balance leading to perfect posture!

WHEN SHOULD MY BABY SEE A CHIROPRACTOR? There are times in a baby's first year of life when new stressors are being placed on their spine and nervous system. At these times, it is very important to get your baby’s spine checked by a paediatric chiropractor to ensure proper development and structure. Important times to bring your baby to a chiropractor include:... After the birth process. When your baby learns to hold his or her own head up. When your baby learns to sit up. When your baby learns to crawl. When your baby learns to stand. When your baby learns to walk. If your baby is experiencing any developmental delays.
