So... would you our your children consider a job in the trades? Why or why not? How do we engage youth in discussions about the trades? Are we as parents purposely or unconsciously deterring our kids from pursuing their interests in the skilled trades? The Ontario government has added funding, but what will it take to encourage youth to seriously consider a job in the skilled trades? ... Devon Turcotte wrote an article on this for CareerWise, and indicated that if parents' attitudes towards the skilled trades are not supportive, youth would be hard-pressed to pursue work in the skilled trades, at least until they reach their mid- to late-20s. https://careerwise.ceric.ca//want-to-boost-interest-in-s/. Be prepared to respond in a supportive way, and know the facts about what life is like for those in the skilled trades: it's definitely not the same in all of the trades. Yes, there is a degree of physical labour, but with an aging skilled trades workforce and a growing need for their services, wages are not likely to stagnate, as many other sectors are facing right now. And some of us enjoy working with our hands far more than sitting at a desk behind a computer for 8+ hours/day. What will your response be?

This is an interesting article about what the future of work may look like if more companies hire remote workers from a global workforce. It would take time for this to develop globally, but we will likely see it happening inter-provincially, and I have seen glimpses of it happening inter-city (for example, as some Toronto residents have moved to their cottages as their primary residence- and more than just seasonally). In supporting student interns, there are more opportuni...ties to work with a company from a further distance as the majority of internships are at least partially virtual.
