Today is world Mental Health Day. Every day should be World Mental Health Day. We never know the path that people are walking and what challenges they face. We may face those challenge ourselves and have misgivings about what is happening or what we are feeling. Menntal health cannot only be described with checklists or textbooks. It is not just a collection of symptoms. It is experiences and realities that people struggle with, sometimes daily. It is trying to find the strength to get out of bed, get dressed, shower, leave your home, talk to people and so much more. Last night the old pier portion of Pier Park in New West burned. I watched it from my home and felt such a sense of loss - this park is an integral piece of our community. Today the fire co rubies to burn underneath the deck, but it has been co rained. Thank you to the firefighters for working through the night to contain the fire and minimize the damage. The air downtown New West is bad. - smoky air made worse by toxic smoke from the fire. Keep your windows closed and avoid being outside if possible. Take care New West! COVID-19 UPDATE: Foundations Naturopathic Health is very excited to announce I will be reopening the clinic doors and accepting in-person appointments starting May 19th. It has been a challenging time for so many in our community and I am looking forward to being able to provide in-person support once again. As directed by our regulatory body, I will be following guidelines outlined by the BC Centre for Disease Control & the Provincial Health Officer to reduce potential tran...smission of COVID-19, including: - screening patients for COVID-19 symptoms as much as I want to see you, please do not come in to the clinic if you are exhibiting any COVID-19 symptoms (fever, cough, runny nose) or have a respiratory illness. Dial 811 or visit Healthlink BC - social distancing some treatments require closer contact, but social distancing will be maintained whenever possible - frequent hand washing this is already done in all clinics, but will be done even more frequently - hand sanitizers in common areas - masks and gloves will be available to patients and worn by me throughout your visit - increased diligence in disinfecting common areas, high touch areas and patient rooms - touch-less credit card payments - telemedicine will continue to be available and may be prioritized above in-patient visits if appropriate - As happy as I am to see patients again, I will not be able to shake hands or have any physical greeting with patients. In light of the escalation of COVID-19 Foundations Naturopathic Health is going to try and do its part to flatten the curve. Starting March 18th I will only be seeing patients via telemedicine. Should you need to schedule a visit with me, please do not hesitate. If you require a refill please let me know and we can make arrangements for that too. Please continue to follow the guidelines laid out by the BCCDC (www.bccdc.ca) and health regulators: self-isolate if you have symptoms and maintain social distancing. COVID-19 Update I am still open to support the community and patients: I wanted to post a quick note to reassure everyone that Foundations Naturopathic Health is taking measures to keep our patients and community safe. All common areas and touch points are wiped regularly to disinfect and hand sanitizer is available for patients. In light of the ‘social distancing’ advised by health officials, I also wanted to let patients know we have the option of online appointments, in...cluding the free Discovery appointment. If you have an appointment booked and prefer to meet online, as opposed to in-clinic, let me know to make arrangements. If you’re feeling unwell, the cancellation policy will not be enforced please stay home and look after yourself. In the meantime, follow the advice of health officials: wash your hands with soap and water, self-isolate if needed,go out only if necessary, and practice ‘social distancing’. By working together, we can weather the storm as a community, supporting each other, and keeping those most vulnerable safe. March 8th is International Women’s Day and the theme this year is I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights. Women’s rights have come a long way in the last 120 years: we are now able to vote, own land, get an education, divorce, marry whom we like, and find our own way in the world. Not every country is the same, not all systems are similar. Each needs to determine what equality is to them. As a Canadian and a GenXer I look back at the women who came before me and... I lay myself at their feet - I will not know the struggles they faced, the battles they fought, the violence they endured to be heard and seen as people. I look to the women who will come after me and know that there are still battles to be won: women still do not have equal pay for equal work; we still face misogyny in our homes, our workplaces, and in our communities. Women still face violence - in all of its forms - on a daily basis, even from each other. Not all women experience inequality the same way - sexuality, gender, race, religion, socioeconomic status, and many other components play a part. Like any other -ism, advances in equality for women will only come from standing up together and speaking out - especially since there are so many who cannot always do this for themselves. Equality for all women, regardless of identity, does not mean inequality for anyone else - it means equality for all.
