How do you bring out the best in your people? What do you do to motivate and inspire those who are in your circle? Far too many leaders do not respect the dignity of others and when this occurs, conflict and distrust ensues. In the words of Donna Hicks, We need an inner compass that is grounded in the knowledge of the inherent value and vulnerability of all human beings and of the world around us. Leaders must learn how to build, strengthen, and energize their organizations by cultivating the dignity of all people.

Dignity and respect. Everyone wants to be treated in a way that shows they matter. Dignity is not the same as respect. We are born with dignity, also described as ‘our inherent value and worth’. Respect is different. Although everyone has dignity, not everyone deserves respect. Respect must be earned. When Nelson Mandela was put into prison he soon realized the guards were trying to strip him of his dignity. He said, Prison and the authorities conspire to rob each man of his dignity. In and of itself, that assured that I would survive, for any man or institution that tries to rob me of my dignity will lose because I will not part with it at any price or under any pressure.
