THE NOT TALKED ABOUT SIDE EFFECTS OF THE MOST POPULAR DRUG IN THE WORLD! Metronidazole is the most prescribed antimicrobial for treatment of diarrhea & GI ...problems in pets and a new study highlights some very important issues that pet parents and their veterinarians need to talk about before prescribing this drug. The new study from the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine found metronidazole administration obliterated a dogs microbiome and a month after the drug, the microbiome was still profoundly destroyed. Our results point toward a longlasting effect of metronidazole administration, and should be considered as further evidence to support a more cautious approach to prescribing this antimicrobial to dogs. - https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/jvim.15871 Has your pet been on this medication? This Sunday at 10am ET, Rodney Habib and I will do a quick FB Live about this new study and I will go over what you need to to think about before and after using this medication.

Buy your pure bred dog from a pet store? Here are the mamas on their way to be bred....again! Dog breeding is big business for the Amish and the conditions th...ese dogs live in are horrific. These poor dogs were shaking uncontrollably. Stop buying dogs from stores. Stop buying dogs off the internet. If you cant visit where your puppy is coming from then you are supporting puppy mills. Stop being part of the problem and only buy from breeders you can visit or better yet...go to your local shelter! See more

FB friends, we got the biopsy report back and with great sorrow I must share this....Our darling girl died from the toxin in this plant that I have on my deck. ... It is called heliotrope and is highly toxic, causes total liver destruction. The pathologist said our angel had the worst liver damage he's ever seen. Goldie would nibble at the leaves of this plant every so often and we had no clue it was toxic. (It can come in white or purple.) Please share with any dog owners you know to hopefully prevent their dog from becoming a statistic like Goldie. We are even more heartbroken now knowing her death was preventable. Please share her story so that something positive may come of it and create awareness of toxic plants. Our own vet had no idea this was a toxic plant!! See more

URGENT APPEAL - Travel restrictions are trapping dogs in Thailand for the foreseeable future. With adopted animals unable to go overseas to their forever homes,... we are facing extreme overcrowding. If we dont create more space, we may have to close our shelter doors to desperate dogs like Roscoe. This is unthinkable. If we dont act now, dogs like Roscoe will die alone and in agony. Please help today. See more

The world has changed, but there are still animals in need You may have seen that we have had to close our facility to the public as part of an effort to redu...ce the spread of COVID-19. We wont sugarcoat it: this is going to hurt us as an organization. Much of the revenue behind our life-saving work is no longer coming in. This pandemic has cast doubt over our work, and our future, as an animal organization. We know that everyone has been affected by whats happening. When toilet paper is hard to come by, donating to organizations can take a backseat. But for those of you who can, were asking for your help. While the building is closed to the public, our work never stops. We will continue to foster, house, feed and provide medical attention to the animals in our care. We will continue to have dedicated staff working round-the-clock to keep these animals happy and healthy. In addition to running costs, we have had to stop our public services. This means we are also losing the revenue that was associated with those programs. We know the community is going to continue to need our support, especially through these times of uncertainty. This is why we are doing what we can to keep our Pet Food Bank open to those who need it, we are reviewing each emergent case to determine if we are able to assist and we are continuing to find homes for the animals in our care. To do this, we need you. Your gift will not only help us to keep animals safe and cared for, but will help us restart all of our Community Services once the COVID-19 situation has passed. Visit us here www.torontohumanesociety.com/covid19 to help us continue doing what we do best: improving the lives of animals.
