2:37am! The camera alarm goes off. We knew Maggie was close. Kept checking the camera. I spotted babies. Time to get a coffee into me and quietly go out to see. Not sure if there will be more come dawn. So excited and so very proud of my Maggie
Things change so fast around here. Yesterday we got another surprise. My beautiful Sylvia, a Cochin mix, has decided that she must have babies and is now sitting on eggs. In the main run, with the main flock.... so a pen with a top has to be set up for her. We also have to build a small coop for a small flock of Bantam Buff Brahmas that were given to me a few days ago. Maggie, my one year old mangalista gilt, is very pregnant, and could have babies between now and a couple weeks. I have been keeping a close eye on her, and making sure she has everything she needs. There are days when it is overwhelming, but the days that bring me the most joy, far outweigh my doubts. We do what we can to give back to the community, and am very grateful to be able to.
Well this was a pleasant surprise. A wonderful lady bright these beauties this afternoon. Absolutely tickled pink.
Wilbur has a new pen. Such a good boy.
These Littles hatch a couple days ago in the homemade incubator Ed built. Extremely pleased with the test hatch. These are available to go to new coops.
Feeling pretty good today. Picked up some new girls couple days ago to replace some that were sent off to retire at another wonderful farm. This brings new blood, and hopefully some beautiful colored eggs.
Over the last few days we have had some changes take place. The main flock got downsized to make room for the pullets that are growing nicely in their own pen. We said Goodbye to Kiwi, it was hard, but was the right thing to do. My energy levels have changed dramatically, and I am doing much more. Planning for winter, preparing as best as we can. The To Do List keeps growing, seems never-ending. Seriously thinking of hiring someone to come in to help a few hours a week, to do the heavier stuff.
Today, we said Goodbye to Kiwi. The day had come when he was more uncomfortable than happy.
This little dude is coming along!
Born August 14th, will be handled when old enough.
This Little Guy Is Doing Well
Incubators are now away, no more hatches unless it's a special order. It has been a good season here on the farm... too many chicks to count have started their lives here, and have gone off to spend their lives elsewhere.
Way To Go Sylvia
Got Hit With Chicken Math
A Kiwi Update: I think he is doing quite well. The leg that was so bad is looking good and getting stronger. He actually bounded out of his house this morning.
Charlie letting us know All Is Right In The World
36 Days and we have super beetles. Thank you Ed for making the pupae tray.
Kiwi having breakfast, doing pretty good considering his legs
