Alberta Craft Beer ADVENT CALENDAR: Day 23 FRUITFUL PURSUITS: PLUM mixed fermentation, from Blind Enthusiasm Brewing Company in Edmonton Those who attended our "sours and mixed fermentation" beer club got to taste some great beers like this from across the province. Blind Enthusiasm is one of the frontrunners in building a dedicated spontaneous fermentation brewery at The Monolith, and this was their first fruited release.... Spontaneous and mixed fermentation is a whole world of beer that has super old roots and super interesting processes. Check out the stories behind the beers on the Blind Enthusiasm website for more details (https://blindenthusiasm.ca//the-story-of-fruitful-pursuit/). This one is super different (and probably the most expensive beer in the pack). Thoughts everyone?

Alberta Craft Beer ADVENT CALENDAR: Day 22 COPPER Vienna style lager, from Brauerei Fahr in Turner Valley Jochen Fahr is doing some amazing stuff down there in Turner Valley, and picking up a lot of international awards on the way. Following German purity laws and some traditional German recipes is carving a great little niche in the Alberta craft beer world.... Amber lagers are a neat style, maybe more refreshing than an ale? Crisper maybe. Thoughts everyone?

Fox & Fable Book & Game Café 23.12.2020

Alberta Craft Gluten-Free ADVENT CALENDAR: Day 20 TROUBLED TEA hard iced tea, from Troubled Monk in Red Deer. Hard iced tea from Alberta! Lots of good stuff coming out of Troubled Monk, from beer to sodas to gin to iced tea! I like the new can design, and it's still a favourite in our non-beer selection.... What do you think?

Alberta Craft Gluten-Free ADVENT CALENDAR: Day 19 RENEGADE CRAFT CUBA LIBRE from Romero Distilling Co. in Calgary. Real rum distilled here in Alberta? Yes please! I see that Country Garden Liquor Store in Camrose now stocks Romero rum (of course, he's the rum guy!) if you want to try it. Mixed with cola and lime is a classic Cuba Libre, or as my Mexican friend would call it, a Mentirita (little lie - as Cuba isn't really free, get it? oh never mind). When you travel in places... where the rum costs less than the cola, then you know you're in rum country - it's a little more pricey here, but I love that Romero is making rum in Alberta! How is it everyone?

Alberta Craft Beer ADVENT CALENDAR: Day 20 THE WOLF hazy pale ale, from Sea Change Brewing Co. in Edmonton/Beaumont This is one of my favourite Alberta hazy pale ales, lots of great fruity overtones from the dry hop. Sea Change is an awesome brewery too - their Prairie Fairy is a regular for us too. Having all artists/musicians running your brewery seems to lead to good things!... Thoughts?

Fox & Fable Book & Game Café 01.12.2020

Alberta Craft Beer ADVENT CALENDAR: Day 16 ¡SALUD! wheat ale, from SYC Brewing Co. in Edmonton This beer is an awesome combo of a bit of saison (Norwegian kveik yeast) with aromatic Sabro hops - a Norwegian-Mexican hoppy farmhouse ale! And low enough alcohol to have one in the afternoon when you still have stuff to do. Unique and refreshing - yes please!... SYC did one of our first cask nights with a double hopped Fjord. They keep making good stuff! Thoughts everyone?

Alberta Craft Beer ADVENT CALENDAR: Day 19 RYES AGAINST THE MACHINE rye brown ale, from Hell's Basement Brewery in Medicine Hat. Can't beat the name on this one. Adding rye to beer should be done more often, I'd say. Adds a really unique layer of flavour to a brown ale. Hell's Basement has some solid core beers, and this one certainly deserves the awards. Now I've got "Guerilla Radio" in my head.... Thoughts?

Alberta Craft Beer ADVENT CALENDAR: Day 18 IN ANOTHER CASTLE peach mango milkshake IPA, from Analog Brewing in Edmonton. Here's another curveball for ya! I really like the "milkshake IPA" train that has been going for the last couple years - hazy, smooth, fruity, not too bitter. This beer was my introduction to Analog (when it was in "beta"), and they continue to be one of my Edmonton favourites. Of course, their beer names and cans might have something to do with it. "Stay W...eird!" What do you think everyone?

Today we wear orange to support and honour residential school survivors and to join together in the spirit of reconciliation. Orange Shirt Day was inspired by the story of a Residential School Survivor named Phyllis Webstad. When Phyllis was six years old she went to an Indian Residential School for the first time wearing a brand new shiny orange shirt bought by her Grandmother. When she arrived at the school her shirt was taken away, never to be worn again. ... To Phyllis Webstad, the colour orange symbolized that she did not matter. Today, she has learned to accept the colour, and even have fun with it, and now the orange shirt has instead became a symbol of hope and reconciliation. By wearing an orange shirt on September 30, you make a powerful statement that Residential Schools were wrong, and you commit to the concept that EVEY CHILD MATTERS. #OrangeShirtDay #EveryChildMatters

Since Orange Shirt Day is next week on September 30, we brought in Phyllis’s Orange Shirt for children and The Orange Shirt Day Journey for a deeper understanding of the day and of residential school reconciliation. Orange Shirt Day was inspired by the story of a Residential School Survivor named Phyllis Webstad. When Phyllis was six years old she went to an Indian Residential School for the first time wearing a brand new shiny orange shirt bought by her Grandmother. Whe...n she arrived at the school her shirt was taken away, never to be worn again. To Phyllis Webstad, the colour orange symbolized that she did not matter. Next Wednesday the staff at Fox & Fable will be wearing orange in support of this movement.

Helena Moncrieff guides us through Canada’s urban orchards and examines our relationship with food through the fruit trees that dot city streets and yards. In her book, The Fruitful City: The Enduring Power of the Urban Food Forest, Helena tracks down the origins of these living heirlooms, and asks how they went from being subsistence staples to deer fodder. She explores the surge of non-profit urban harvest organizations trying to prevent that bounty from rotting on concrete. Helena will show us that while the bounty of apples is great, reconnecting with nature and our community is the real prize."

Welcome to a brand new Alberta brewery, TRIAL & ALE! focused on sours and wild fermentation! Get their first release at the Fox & Fable! www.mixedfermentation.com "Separated to a Degree" Our first mixed fermentation release. We've waited a long time and cultivated an elaborate mixture of wild yeast and lactic acid bacteria over a period of years to bring you this blend. Presented with light copper hues and a citrus nose, the first impression of upfront lactic sourness soon ...gives way to a retronasal grapefruit olfaction that delights. We wanted to showcase our blend to be the difference, not the similarity. While there are many qualities that make this beer a textbook American Sour & Wild Mixed Fermentation by style, there are yet more characteristics that separate it from the pack. We hope that this blend is the first of many you come to enjoy in the future. HOPS: A Minuscule Addition of German Hallertau MALTS: Pilsner, Wheat, Oats YEAST/BACTERIA: A Melange of Several Different House Primary Strains, Several Select Brettanomyces Strains, Lactobacillus Plantarum, Lactobacillus Brevis, Additional House Cultures, Saccharomyces Bayanus for bottle conditioning Based in Edmonton, AB, we’ve set up our production brewery to be 100% exclusive to mixed fermentation sour and wild beers. Our initial barrel investment allows us to guarantee that all of our beers spend time on oak during the maturation period before they are released. Additionally, all of our beers go through a minimum four stage fermentation lifecycle: initial primary fermentation, secondary fermentation on oak, a homogenizing fermentation after blending, and finally a fourth fermentation in bottle to produce the tight, silky effervescence characteristic of these unique beer styles. Some releases will also include a fifth fermentation (fruited blends) between the other fermentation steps.
