Autism Acceptance Month: Day 19 Lemons It’s not always rainbows and sunshine. There are sour moods, and waves of anger, frustration. These emotions are welcome in our home. ... We don’t bottle them up, bury them or ignore them. They are valid feelings. They deserve a time and place to be acknowledged. Sometimes they last a few minutes, other times they linger, staying for a few weeks between bursts of elation or joy. Kip is a living, breathing, human being and he too feels all emotions. His autism doesn’t erase them. The past few days he’s been a little lemon. Sour, angry, and a bit sweet. He’s asked to snuggle beside me, and for tickles. He fell asleep reading a book, quietly and alone. He’s stomped around and yelled, then let tears flow for what felt like hours. Maybe he’s feeling the emotional wave of the world? Or maybe he’s missing the old rhythm of life? Whichever it is, his feelings are all valid. (And sometimes it actually feels good to be a bit sour.) Sour times allow us to appreciate the sweet times. So let’s all be lemons for a bit ... it’s okay, it’s allowed. See more

Autism Acceptance Month: Day 17 Grounding the flighty one. Do you do Yoga or stretching with your children? I used to with my older two and then we had our little one and I sort of lost the habit. It was very beneficial for both children, and me. We would follow books, such as the Yoga ABCs, or just stretch and bend, moving the stagnant energy through our bodies. ... It was tricky getting Kip to settle long enough to feel the effects of meditation but there were definitely positive moods after a good stretch. Remember to always trust your body and understand its limits, and let your children lead themselves as to not pull muscles or do damage. So great advice from Luna ... stretch! To set things right.
