My Summer Sewing Surprise Quilt is finished - just under the deadline. It will be posted with many others (there were 105 participants.) on the web. People are at different stages with their quilts but many were finished & they are all very different, even though the same pattern was used.
Just got started on the Summer Sewing Surprise Quilt - we are sent instructions every 2 weeks with each step. We don't know what the quilt will be like when finished. The first picture is the materials I chose with the addition of a black piece, a green piece and a very rusty piece which you can see in the second picture. The first step is always cutting the pieces. In the 2nd step, for this surprise, two each of the long pieces were sewn together.
These placemats were waiting for binding material as I ran out of the material I had. Had just been waiting for the quilt shops to open! The second photo is my version of a string quilt, or a scrappy quilt - done. It's different but still appeals to me. The second string quilt is done except for burying a few threads. I am now struggling with a 'mat' made from rope wrapped with selvages. My machines is not happy about zigzagging through the rope so it is a slow process.
The first 2 pictures are bucket hats I made for 2 of my granddaughters. They were surprisingly easy to make. One has dancing girls and unicorns in rainbow colours, the other has rainbows and Pegasus. The 3rd picture is a quilt I crocheted. It was not difficult to do but it was difficult to follow the pattern correctly. I am pleased with the finished product.
Have you ever thought about quilting virtually? The idea came to me as I was waking up this morning. You would never have to rip out any mistakes! I have been quilting the curves on my 2 bargello quilts, which are small quilts but still challenging, and I have done my share of ripping and requilting.
The first picture is an idea I thought of while working on other projects. I still had a lot of bits and pieces of material left & I was trying to think of an easier way to do a string quilt. I sorted the material into strip widths first and then into colour within each width. I sewed several strips at the ends until they got so long, it was ridiculous. So I sewed other strips together, same thing. I laid them out with the narrowest strips first to the widest strips. Then I decided on a random width for the quilt. As you can see, the quilt was so long, I divided it into 2 smaller quilts. They are awaiting backing material - after the stores open again. I am quite pleased with the look - it's amazing with so many different materials that it all comes together.
These snowflake hot placemats needed the binding done around the edge and I finally finished them. They have heat-holding material inside as well as a batting layer so the table is fully protected from hot dishes.
This is my Roughriders Quilt with a fuzzy back made for my partner (and for me!). I outlined 4 different poses of footballers which are shown on the back as they don't show up in the picture on the front.
The last several days, we have been self-isolating as advised by the government. Being retired it's not much different for us than usual except that church & all the volunteer meetings are cancelled. Maryfield is basically shut down except for the grocery store. I did grocery shop yesterday. We are in a very rural area so no signs of Covid-19 here yet. I have been working on finished my several partly done projects: hand sewing the binding on 1 string quilt, trying to decide how to quilt the 2nd string quilt, getting the 20 placemats ready for binding and trying to ignore the 2 bargello quilts that are quietly waiting for some attention.
Franny's Quilts (me) has been busy with this lockdown. We were supposed to go to Saskatoon this week but the meeting was changed to a video meeting - a good thing! I have quilted one of the string quilts & have the binding on ready for hand sewing. The other string quilt is in the process of quilting with time out to consider what to quilt on it next. I have 20 placemats - same design, different materials for sets of 4, 8 & 8 - in various stages of quilting. My 2 small bargello quilts are waiting patiently for attention. they don't complain at all!
Still working on the string quilts & the bargello quilts - have started the quilting process. I am taking a class at Shirley's Sewing Room in Moosomin the end of March. It is a quilt called Coral Reef & I have lots of exciting colours from my stash to use in it.
This is the quilt I donated to the Maryfield Auditorium Online Auction. It is worth checking out for lots of good items.
Here are some of my projects that I have mentioned - the bargello, partially done made totally out of leftovers; the disappearing nine-patch, very easy to do; the 2 string quilts - turned out a lot better than I thought they would and I still have more leftovers!; and the hot plate Christmas mats, about 10 inches across.
Although I have not been posting for quite awhile, I have been busy quilting since Christmas. Right now, I ham working on a bargello quilt and I have 2 string quilts ready to be sandwiched and then quilted. My sister-in-law told me about string quilts to use up bits & pieces of material - it certainly worked! I started out to make one quilt but ended up with two smaller quilts because there were so many scraps.
These are a few other projects - a lap quilt with pansies, two table runners and a wall hanging for a band called Friday Flamingo. Currently, I am working on another bargello quilt and some hot pads, hopefully done for Christmas. I also have a quilt in cream, brown & orange Disappearing Nine Patch that needs quilting and binding. I guess I won't be getting into trouble anytime soon, although ....
