We were supposed to be firing the wood kiln this weekend. Would have been perfect weather. The COVID lockdown threw a wrench in those plans. Instead we are having a great purging brush fire. Paulus cut down approximately 18 - 20 Manitoba Maple/BoxElder trees. A scourge on our property.
Rise and shine! The early birds are catching the worms. #franticfarms #acmeanimal #clocks #warkworth #trenthills

New ornaments in the gallery. Getting ready for Christmas!
Paulus and Becky are having a spooktacular time in the glass studio!
Look who came to blow glass with Paulus! They are dancing in the studio and making some cloud garden lights. 39 degrees in the studio and over 20 outside on November 8th!
There is new work by Paul Portelli in the Gallery. The Brood. These sculptures are wonderfully balanced, found metal hinges, rings and pulleys with his cheeky little sculpted terra cotta birds.
Some beautiful new bowls that Paulus has recently made. The glass studio is hot and the coloured glass is bright and cheerful. Great way to hang on to the memories of summer flowers!
End of October and another great wood firing. The 35th firing in the Hog Barn Babe. Great team of potters participating. Four of the original HBBabes Liz Willoughby, Heather Daymond, Shirley Clifford and myself, Monica Johnston. Also my wonderful home team, Jocelyn Edwards with hubby Arron, the amazing stoking team of Louise Hellyer and Ray Shivrattan, and my newest team who brave the 3:00am shift with me (gotta love the insomniac’s), we all have our shifts down pat. The HBBabes come in for the morning shift and boy it’s magic. The kiln loves to roar, great reduction with a few sticks and I’m always amazed at how much wood is left over. Unloading the kiln is better than Christmas. We are done for the year. I can’t wait until spring for the next firing.
Great way to check out our business online.
The General Fine Craft Gallery is a wonderful place to shop if you are in Almonte. We are pleased to have our work represented there.
While the wood kiln is firing in the barn Paulus is busy blowing glass in the studio. The studio was off for 9 months this year. Now he is trying to catch up on all of his orders. Here is a snippet of him making a garden spike light.
It has been a busy month. Two back to back wood firings. A lot of pots made and a lot of wood collected and stacked and a lot of shelves cleaned. This is number 35 for the Hog Barn Baby. The firings just keep getting better and better. I have a great team helping.

So true. Just do it. Don't be shy. It feels good to create!
Need a mask? We have lots to choose from. Made by our talented daughter Natalia. Kids sizes available. Check it out at Frantic Farms Gallery in Warkworth.
Looking forward to being invaded!
Some more work from the last wood firing plus som from a previous firing. The ever rustic, shiny and rustic Shino glaze. It has so many variations depending on the clay and where it is placed in the kiln and how much ash it gets during the firing. Always a surprise. Potters love Shino. It’s Elusive. I love all the variations.
I have been working with a few copper based Oribe glazes for years now. I love the colours and surfaces that I get in the wood kiln. The glazes come alive when ash hits the pot and the flame and heat melts it into the glaze.
We had another fabulous firing in the Hog Barn Baby (HBB). The 33rd firing. We gain so much knowledge every time we fire. Careful note taking is so important. This year, having been quarantined gave me extra time to think about the loading and the firing schedule. Having a great team is really important as well. Shout out to Louise, Jocelyn, Arron, Ray, Gary and Liz Willoughby! I also couldn’t have done it without my wonderful husband Paulus Tjiang. My special dates early Sunday mornings gathering wood from the pallet factory! Just so you know, we were all wearing masks, safety glasses, gloves and kept away from each other. Easy to do with this kiln. Here are some pics.
The peonies are blooming in the garden. We wait all year for the time to fill Monica’s wood fired Oribe vases and enjoy their beauty and sweet aroma.
Thank goodness I can self isolate in my studio. Enjoying quiet time making new work. I’m also taking advantage of the quiet time to reclaim and pug clay. Have my handy rodaco clay scraper to help scape up the clay off the drying bat. Who still has one of those?
In my case since 1982!
Unfortunately Natalia's workshop is cancelled. Stay safe everyone.

Looking forward to participating at this great show.
Monica and I will be at the opening tomorrow 2 - 4pm
The beacon is lit and the sentinels are positioned. Ready for the Mothership to land.
The fires have been burning all over Ontario for this wonderful show.
A beautiful crisp night firing the Hog Barn Baby. Stoked and roaring. Great reduction!
Getting ready for a wood firing isn't all making pots and stacking wood. For Monica Johnston it's all about the glazes as well. Most of her glazes have copper carbonate in them. There is such a variation of colour and beautiful crystals on the surface where the fly ash has landed on the glaze and melted in. Very rich! Can't wait to see the results! #oribe glaze #woodfire #bonfeudeux #shanenorriecontemporarygallery. #stratford
Replacing the 15year old bag wall in the wood kiln. Getting ready for a fall firing.
