Today, September 10th is recognized as World Suicide Prevention Day. Around the world, people join together to promote understanding and raise awareness about suicide, organizations that work in suicide prevention, and celebrating those impacted by the loss of loved ones to suicide. Suicide is complex phenomenon, the result of a convergence of genetic, psychological, social and cultural and other risk factors, sometimes combined with experiences of trauma and loss. Suicide pr...evention is possible, whether it is at the individual level or the community level. As a gesture of support for those bereaving a loved one to suicide, please join us in lighting a candle by a window at 8pm. If you wish to take your support further, consider donating to a local community organization or volunteering your time, question stigma around mental health and suicide as you encounter it in your everyday life, and advocate for social and policy reforms that tackle systemic inequality. Suicide is a complex issue that needs to be addressed through a multi-level approach. Everyone has a part to play.
