It has been a year since harvesting began in the Fraser Lake Community Forest. Our harvesting has focused on Mountain Pine Beetle damaged pine and stands of blown down spruce. We have strived to improve the use of available fiber. We have modified our procedures and use of equipment to recover more of the dead and fallen trees from the forest. We are maximizing the value of the fiber, while recovering more of the low grade materials that do not make the cut as saw log. ...Recovering more creates jobs. According to data from the BC Community Forest Association, our methods provide more employment per cubic meter of wood harvested when compared to conventional logging methods. Last winter our Community Forest employed over 40 people. Wildlife and the environment are important to us all. Our mantra in the Community Forest is Recovery & Retention. This means recovering dead trees while retaining the understory of smaller, not-yet-merchantable trees. This approach enhances the habitat for wildlife by improving accessibility while retaining cover. The added benefit of reducing the heavy fuel load is it reduces the likelihood of a catastrophic wildfire at some time in the future. We hope that never happens, but we are working hard to address the highest risk areas first. Our achievements in the community forest are a team effort. Those working in the Community Forest care about the resource, the land, and the wildlife and we are proud of their accomplishments. Through responsible stewardship of the resource, we believe we are improving the land, returning it to a productive state and providing benefit to our community. Please have a look at our first Fraser Lake Community Forest video. We hope you like it. As future videos are produced, to highlight the various harvesting methods we are using, they will be placed on our Village Website for your viewing pleasure. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Village Office. https://youtu.be/UwLowFhe8g8 R.J. Holland Administrative Officer Village of Fraser Lake
