May 5th marks National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. People are encouraged to wear red to help raise awareness. Before ...participating, please take some time to educate yourself on the scope of the issue and underlying causes. In addition to the information in this post, you can visit archway.ca/MMIWG/ for more resources including links to reports and documentaries. To quote Regional Chief Terry Teegee , No one should be ignorant, but should instead make themselves aware of the causes and range of impacts of such violence. Everyone has a responsibility to take swift action to prevent and respond to violence against Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ individuals.

Today, May 5th, is Red Dress Day: a National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two Spirit People. Via Canadian Human Rights... Commission: "In honour of #RedDressDay, we remember all the Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people who have gone missing or been murdered as a result of historical violence and systemic racism. We stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities who have lost their loved ones, and support their calls for action. The red dress is a powerful, visual symbol of the people who are no longer with us, and was originally a project by Indigenous artist Jamie Black." We encourage folks to read the the final report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and 231 individual Calls for Justice here: http://ow.ly/5CJd50EFGtq

Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester's death, and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance. "Transgender Day of Remembrance seeks to highlight the losses we face due to anti-transgender bigotry... and violence. I am no stranger to the need to fight for our rights, and the right to simply exist is first and foremost. With so many seeking to erase transgender people -- sometimes in the most brutal ways possible -- it is vitally important that those we lose are remembered, and that we continue to fight for justice." - Transgender Day of Remembrance founder Gwendolyn Ann Smith See more
