I am part of a research team at UNB that is conducting an anonymous survey in order to determine public opinion on muskellunge in the Saint John (Wolastoq) River, New Brunswick, as well as current and potential sport fishing impacts on the species. To all members of Fredericton Fish & Game, Attached is a list of dates for various draws that will occur this year. When you apply for such things as the antlerless deer draw, moose tag etc. now you’ll know the dates for applications and when the draws will occur. Because we are unable to meet this spring for fly tying and our monthly club meetings, we are going to provide each 2020 member with a complimentary membership for 2021 so watch your mail.... On behalf of the board of directors, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all our members and followers. Simply put, this year has not been great on many fronts but to see many folks enjoy successes from the water to the field, amidst troubling times, makes the hours put into conservation that much worthwhile. One light in the darkness of 2020, hunting wise is the incredible growth of women participating!! This is wonderful news!!... More and more families will learn and enjoy the great outdoors. Here’s to a return to normal or as close as we can get for 2021. We miss our monthly meetings and most importantly, being with our friends and club members. Cheers and be safe!!

Folks, upon further review of the recent increase of cases pertaining to COVID-19, the safety of our members is of our highest priority, so we have decided to postpone our upcoming October meeting. Here’s hoping for November. Please keep safe!

To all members of Fredericton Fish & Game; We are planning to start our monthly meetings next week, Tuesday, 13 October at 7 pm at Exit Realty. Having said that, if you have recently travelled outside the Atlantic Bubble, are not feeling well, or are uncomfortable attending meetings at this time, we would expect you not to attend but we hope to see you at future meetings. If you do plan on attending, we do expect you to wear a mask throughout the meeting and if the chairs ar...ound the table are occupied, to sit in the row next to the wall. Our guest speaker will be Jonathan Cormier (DNR furbearer biologist) and he will speak to us on the provincial furbearer/trapping program. As usual, we will draw for prizes but we will not be serving refreshments at the next number of meetings. If you have concerns about the meeting format, please contact me. Hope to see you at the meeting next Tuesday and bring moose photos and stories if you were a lucky hunter.

To all Members of Fredericton Fish & Game, On behalf of the executive, we hope that you are staying healthy and enjoying what is left of the summer. We have discussed the idea of starting our monthly meetings again but all of us feel it is still too early to make this move. However, we have been talking to possible future presenters and should have a lineup of interesting presentations when meetings resume.... One of our first presentations will deal with the new turkey hunt the application system to get a tag, if there’s a hunter training program, the gear and procedures to hunt them. You might recall, this was the presentation that had been scheduled for the spring but had to be cancelled due to covid. With respect to the remainder of salmon season, the water levels are extremely low but at least the water temperatures are better. On a positive note, the barrier counts suggest the number of salmon/grilse are better than last year so Let’s hope we get rain before the end of the season. For the grouse/partridge hunters among our membership, you may recall that an e-mail was circulated a couple of months ago asking for our assistance in tracking West Nile Virus in our partridge population. It sounds easy to do: when you shoot a bird, simply smear a couple drops of blood on the enclosed slip, let it air day, then mail it in EASY PEEZY. I myself requesedt a dozen test kits to share with my brothers who hunt partridge more than I do. When we do get together again, I hope you’ll have some great fishing/moose hunting stories/photos to share with the group. I tried early in the spring/summer to land a brown trout to settle a bet with a friend so far no luck but I’ll try one last time before the season closes on 15 September. Fisheries and Oceans Canada Gulf Region Reopening of recreational fisheries for all species on the Miramichi River system... Tracadie August 17, 2020 - Fisheries and Oceans Canada wishes to inform the public that, following an improvement in water conditions, angling for all species of fish will reopen without daily fishing period restriction in the Miramichi River, including the Northwest Miramichi River, the Little Southwest Miramichi River, the Big Sevogle River, the Main Southwest Miramichi River, Rocky Brook, Clearwater Brook, the Renous River, the Dungarvon River, Bartholomew River, the Cains River as per the strategy implemented in cooperation with local partners to respond to warm waters conditions. The reopening will be effective as of Tuesday August 18, 2020. Please note that the 27 salmon fishing pools in the Miramichi River system, closed on July 21, 2020, will remain closed to angling for all species of fish until conditions improve. Reminder: please note that the three following pools will remain closed until December 31, 2020: Confluence of Sutherland Brook and Northwest Miramichi River, including the waters of Sutherland Brook upstream to the Highway 420; Waters of the Southwest Miramichi River in Quarryville, 300 m upstream and 300 m downstream of the Quarryville Bridge, including Indian Town Brook from its confluence with the Southwest Miramichi River, upstream to Highway 108 bridge; Confluence of Wilson Brook and Southwest Miramichi River, including the waters of Wilson Brook 100 m upstream of its mouth, an area locally known as the Bear Den; For further details, please consult the Gulf Variation Order 2020-103 for further details.
