"THE BIG LAKE IS A DEEP LAKE .. DARK ...... COLD" (acrylic on canvas, 48"x60" - completed 2016) This painting was done in November 2015 around the 40th anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. I recalled l was in that storm driving from Sault Ste Marie to Red Rock, Ontario back in 1975. I first heard about the news of the ship sinking on the day after. lt was a rough drive. The next year, Gordon Lightfoot's song came out which made the sinking of the Edmund Fitzge...rald into the legend we now know. I started to work on a response. I gathered all the information about the ship's sinking l could find and went to my collection of photos of Lake Superior - The Big Lake. I took a large 48"x60" canvas and started to work away. I wanted to show the true feeling of the lake, its size, its depth, its dark weather and its cold touch... and the lost Edmund Fitzgerald. Dark stormy clouds hiding the sunlight that reflects off the lake suface with rain and a lone red laker ship on the horzon making its way across the vast dark lake. Then I cut a section down through the lake below the reflected light, cold blue light barely revealing the Edmund Fitzgerald resting on the bottom which was split in two. See more
