Happy #NationalVolunteerWeek ! Thank you to all volunteer teams across Fred Victor for your dedication, passion, and hard work during these challenging times! We couldn't do it without you. You are the backbone of what we do! Join us in celebrating our heroes!
The impact of COVID-19 on the vulnerable communities we serve is deeply troubling. Since the start of the pandemic, the safety of our staff and clients has been our primary concern. We are very proud of our incredible staff for running successful vaccine clinics across our sites.
The Edward Hotel is now a Temporary Shelter operated by Fred Victor. It has specialized supports for homeless women, men and couples who face barriers to securing a home. Some face multiple challenges such as mental health issues, substance use, social isolation, immigration status, unemployment and underemployment. People come from diverse backgrounds. The shelter has enhanced case management and housing services, mental health and addictions counselling, trauma informed car...e support, harm reduction interventions provided by staff and Peers, access to primary health care and referrals and continuous one-on-one check in. The goal here is to help people secure permanent affordable and safe housing with connections to the community of their choice. Thank you to City of Toronto making this all possible so people living in encampments can access a safe, supportive indoor space. See more

March 23rd is #NationalPuppyDay and as an organization that welcomes owners and their dogs, once again we want to acknowledge the importance of having a pet by one's side. Having a pet to provide companionship, protection, and love can be a major contributing factor whether someone survives or not. They are a lifeline for their owner and a source of courage, strength, and love for someone struggling to survive.
Thank you to all volunteers, donors and supporters! We served over 400 meals and gave away 450 winter care kits to our community at 40 Oaks! Our 145 Queen Street location served an additional 670 over the holiday weekend!!
Most people are struggling with being separated from their families. Unfortunately, this is nothing new for homeless people. Many shelters don’t allow pets, meaning people experiencing homelessness are forced to choose between a warm bed and their furry friend. Staying out of the freezing cold without having to say goodbye to family is one of the best gifts they can get. Give today: https://www.fredvictor.org/gift/furry-friends-accomodation/
Gift cards are the perfect holiday gift, especially for loved ones who are hard to buy for. It’s not exactly the most creative option, but it gives the recipient freedom to choose exactly what they want or need. Gift cards are an even more powerful gift for people experiencing homelessness. With a grocery gift card, people experiencing homelessness aren’t just given the ability to eat; they’re also given the dignity of being able to choose what they eat. Some say sweater weather is whenever the leaves turn. Others say it’s when you can see your own breath. But for the homeless, it’s whenever they can possibly get their hands on something warm to wear. Warm clothing like sweaters are crucial for the homeless, especially those living in Toronto, who might be unprepared for the steep decline in temperature. Everyone knows that a hot plate of hearty food can warm the soul. What not everyone knows is how far a hot meal can go towards warming the body of someone who’s been sitting outside in the cold for hours, or even days. Warm food provides the homeless with the heat and nutrition they often lack, but also a sense of belonging and community that comes with sitting around a table with others. For charities, there's nothing better than regular, strong, long-term relationshipsyou'll get so much more out of it as a donor, and the charity will get so much more out of it because you're going to give things that they actually need.
