The pandemic. Feeling trapped inside a small, dark, box with the sides coming in upon us. Feeling alone and afraid to step outside. What is real anymore? What are we able to do, who are we able to see, where is the line drawn? We don't want to get sick or especially don't want to get anyone else sick but our mental health is declining quickly as well. Suicide rates have gone up 1000% percent in North America and senior's homes and hospitals have been on lockdown since ...March, leaving people unable to leave their rooms. It is an unbelievably difficult time for everyone and I pray that we are through this quickly. I still have a few adjustments to make on this painting but thought I would share the progress so far. This painting represents how I felt during the pandemic during isolation. Trapped in darkness and feeling alone yet the flowers she holds represents the hope and joy that we can find in little things; a smile on the street, sparkling snowflakes, the laughter of a child, sending a letter, shopping in local businesses, doing those hobbies that you've been putting off and more. Body Image. It is such a difficult subject and an issue that I have struggled with for all of my life. When I went through some health issues I gained a lot of weight and was called "a dinosaur", "a hippo", "ugly" and people said "what happened, you used to be pretty". No one wanted to ask me if I was okay and I didn't hear "pretty" or "beautiful" for years. I will admit that I missed it. But mostly I wanted to be treated the same as I was before. I was treated as thou...gh I was less smart, less capable and less of a person. The worst part is that I started to believe it myself. I'm not telling you this to feel sorry for me. I love the person that I am now and I want you to know that you can love who you are too. Painting this woman with her dark outline to show her body types helped me heal. Helped me see that though there is sadness in her eyes, she is a person that can bring joy and feel joy and it doesn't matter the rest. It matters what is on the inside that counts. My dark friend. Depression. Where I'm left feeling nothing but floating in a haze of darkness that no one else can see. Everything is blurry. I feel heavy. I feel alone. Thankfully after years of being diagnosed with depression I have learned to deal with it and feel joy most days now.
