Last summer and fall I was so busy that I decided that instead of preparing and drying the tomato seeds I wanted to save, I placed them in freezer baggies and labeled them. Now I am thawing and drying out the seeds of only the tomato varieties that didn't split or blight, I chose carefully which types to save. I labeled each bunch of paper towels, thawed the tomato, squish some seeds out, shmere the seeds around the paper towel, then set somewhere safe to dry for a couple of ...weeks. Alot of the funky varieties of tomatoes seeds that I purchased last year are already sold out, so I am especially glad that I saved mine! Most tomatoes sold in grocery stores are F1 hybrids the "seed produced by F1 plants is genetically unstable and cannot be saved for use in following years. ... Gardeners who use hybrid plant varieties must purchase new seed every year. Hybrid seeds can be stabilized, becoming open-pollinated varieties, by growing, selecting, and saving the seed over many years." Organic tomatoes though, should be a non GMO heirloom and would likely work. See more

RIP Dave Prowse, who played Darth Vader and was a dear friend of my late Father Derek Markle. Some of my dads prized possessions were masks and props from the movies, as a kid I had thought they were just reproduction masks but they were actually used in the films, given to him by Dave.

I have heard and experienced many of the medicinal benefits of marijuana but didn't think about companion planting! The potato bugs were crazy this year, every plant was covered in them, other than the ones planted in the garden with my pot plants, there was not one! When discussing with a friend, she told me of a friends tomato plants plagued by tomato worms, he planted a couple of marijuana plants amongst them and sprinkled ground pot leaves around. The worms rapidly vacated. As we are only allowed to grow 4 plants per household I obviously cannot plant them in every one of our 7 large gardens, so I am going to try grinding and adding my trimmings to our gardens.

Ok, I have fallen in love with a tomato. Was so obsessed with the Green Tiger and Banana Leggs that I totally forgot about the Pink, Purple and Sunrise Bumblebee cherry tomatoes! I have never seen a tomato so pretty! Prolific large plant, delicious, and beautiful, doesn't seem prone to early splitting, looking forward to growing many many more next year! These guys, along with other veg & pork, are on their way to the restaurant at the Fenelon Falls Brewing Co to be enjoyed by many!

This year we grew a whole bunch of different interesting varieties of heritage tomato seeds that we ordered online. It's incredible the number of different types available. It has been interesting watching them grow and start ripening. I am exceptionally excited, more like obsessed, particularly about the Banana Leggs & Green Tiger cherry tomatoes they are so cool looking and just starting to ripen. The Green Tiger are fabulous, plentiful and so tasty! The Banana Leggs are i...mpressive looking and quite nice but taste like a normal low acid yellow tomato. Both are now in the cherry tomato mix that I bring to the restaurant at the Fenelon Falls Brewing Co so if you have been a patron you may have already experienced their delightful flavor. When I delivered veggies there this week they gave us a beautiful custom made t shirt, as a thank you to the customers who supported them during closure. Printed on ths back are the names of those people. Proceeds from beer sales have been donated to Kawartha Conservation and Ross Memorial.
