To say things are a bit upside down right now would be an understatement, as we are all learning to adjust to life with COVID-19. We know that many schools have been closed, and people are needing to change their work schedules to care for the children, or maybe you are all quarantining as a family together. Whatever the case, this situation is brand new to all of us, and while it is a scary and unsure time, we would love to try and bring some ease to your days by offering ou...r resources at 30% off. Additionally, some of you may know that every month we donate a percentage of our sales to One Tree Planted and the Canadian Association of the Deaf, but starting today we will be temporarily shifting our donations to Direct Relief (@directrelief), a non-profit charity organization which provides medical gear to health professionals who are working directly on the COVID-19 frontlines here and internationally. As a small business, we truly wish there was more we could do or offer, but we do believe that every contribution and effort makes a difference. To all the families who have suddenly become homeschool teachers overnight take a breath. Over the last few days we have received panicked messages about feeling lost and overwhelmed, fearful that your children are going to sit at home watching TV over the next few months or even the remainder of the year. First off, your feelings are valid. And of course you are unprepared that is the state of our world right now, and no one expects you to have it all figured out. For this first little while, don't feel pressured to jump into a curriculum or lesson plan straight away. Use this time to adjust. Don't throw random busywork at your kids just for the sake of them being occupied. Education, especially in the home setting, is meant to be thoughtful and intentional. For the moment, focus on a few things you'd like to teach your children and include them in this discussion. What are they interested in learning? What do you feel comfortable teaching them? How much time in the day are you able to dedicate to structured learning time? Furthermore, children learn from experience. We can't stress this enough. Let them play. Turn their backyard time into scavenger hunts. Let them help you clean the house. Take out those those books that have been collecting dust. Do the best with what you can and know that it is enough. One of the most frequently asked questions about our flashcards is how early can I start teaching ASL to my child? We always always always encourage introducing it earlier than later. I only started learning ASL and taking classes last year, and I can tell you that at 30 years old, it has been a challenge. I wish I was introduced to it at a younger age when I was more of a sponge. Regardless if the conversation is between you and your child or between adults, there are ma...ny complex and sometimes difficult questions to be asked. There is not enough awareness and education about people who are Deaf or HoH, which is baffling considering how many people in the world are living with Deafness or some level of hearing loss. I can tell you that in just a short year, I have learned a lot, but know that I’ve only scratched the surface and there is still so much to learn. I have acknowledged that I have spent 29 years of my life being unknowingly oblivious and ignorant to such a large community that, on a daily basis, has to fight for their basic human rights and overcome hurdles that I will never have to.
