INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY . Today we celebrate all the amazing women who continue to fight for equality, for justice and for freedom. Women are remarkable and so today we hope that you feel cherished and loved. We want to take this moment to honour four incredible women with powerful voices. Blake Lively: Many of you may know Lively is a huge advocate against Human Trafficking. She has used her platform to spread awareness and continues to speak out against the horrors of s...ex trafficking. She and husband Ryan Reynolds, have also made generous donations towards organizations that help protect at risk and trafficked youth. Ruby Bridges: At the age of six, Bridges advanced the cause of civil rights in November 1960 when she became the first African American student to integrate an elementary school in the South. Dorothy Height: Better known as The Godmother of the Civil Rights Movement. Height was also a woman’s rights activist. She continued to fight for the equality of African American women, focussing her attention on voter awareness and unemployment. Malala Yousafzai: The youngest person to receive a Nobel Prize. She risked her very life to advocate for women’s right to an education in Pakistan. She continues to fight for women and children’s right to an education. We hope you can be inspired today by these incredible women. Each and every single one of us has the power to move the needle forward and continue to fight for justice and equality. Not one province in Canada mandates teaching students about sex trafficking, even though schools are prime targets for perpetrators. Experts who work with victims and survivors say students should be specifically taught about sex trafficking in class because schools are among the places where traffickers recruit kids, and it’s important that they learn how to recognize recruitment techniques, so they can get help. But experts say students should also learn about causes such as gender inequity and poverty.

BLOG POST . . Women in Nigeria are tired of the violence and victim-blaming. All without adequate support and assistance from the Nigerian government. Innocent women are being abducted, raped, and murdered each year. The legal system in Nigeria continues to voice the difficulties women face when attempting to convict rapists. Women don’t have a voice which makes it easier for perpetrators to hurt them, take advantage of them and compromise them. ... Last April, a 22-year old Nigerian woman was killed in a church after being brutally raped. This tragedy sparked street protests, an online petition, as well as the Twitter hashtag #WeAreTired. The system is at fault, with police demanding bribes and mistreating families of victims. Boys need education surrounding consent and to learn that no means no. The most recent campaigning has focused on eliminating a culture of victim-blaming in Nigerian society. . . The Centre to End Human Trafficking released a report Monday documenting the routes traffickers use to transport victims. It identified Ontario’s 401 highway, as well as highways 11 and 17 connecting Sudbury and Thunder Bay through Northern Ontario and onward to Winnipeg.
