Alsace@ Lorraine, France Reds The east of France is full of surprising contrasts and though better known for whites is capable of producing stunning reds as well. Alsace pinots are getting a little better known, deservedly so, and are in a style that is quite unlike Burgundy. Producing reds in the Jura is a trickier proposition but we've found a lovely one from the local mondeuse grape variety.... Whites This eastern region of France is protected by the Vosges mountains and enjoys an unparalleled climate with annual rainfall nearly as low as in the Midi. Despite its latitude, grapes ripen to perfection. Complex geology has taught generations of growers to plant grape varieties to match soil types so that today seven major grapes are planted here. Some are blended together but most are made and bottled separately. Alsace white wines are fruity and generally made without barrel-ageing. Wines come in various levels of sweetness but at The Wine Society most are essentially dry and food-friendly. The Wine Society was voted the Specialist Wine Merchant of the Year for Alsace at the International Wine Challenge in 2014 for the seventh consecutive year. http://www.thewinesociety.com/shop/shop.aspx
