Imagine the aroma, if I worked there they could pay me in saltfish.

Saturday and Sunday are the last two days for the bread oven this summer! Oven operates from 10 - 4 with bread baking at 2 pm.
A lovely meal to end the season put on by our bread oven workers Audrey and Karen for our students and board members. Great job ladies!
The French Bread Oven is now closed for the season. Here are some photos from today. We want to thank all of our visitors who participated in the program this year. You helped make what started out to be a bleak looking year a great success. Of course we saw fewer people than previous years because of the lack of bus tours, and other Canadian and American visitors but those who came made up for those that didn’t. We will be much better prepared for whatever comes our way in 2021! Many thanks to our employees, board members and volunteers who worked diligently to keep our program going! We appreciate you more than ever this year!

A perfect staycation is Port au Choix up on the Great Northern Peninsula. The town is a crossroads of ancient cultures, dating back nearly 6,000 years ago; fo...llowed by European fishers around 1600s. The town is a National Historic Site and has an engaging visitors centre which explains the town’s ancient history- one of the richest archeological sites in North America. There is also a French Rooms Cultural Centre where you will also learn about recent history and the resettlement era; and enjoy the treat delights from a replicated French oven. Boasting three quaint harbours, Port au Choix is a photographer’s delight with beautiful images every where you turn. The community also has a striking and historic lighthouse out at Point Riche, where you will likely catch sight of a local caribou herd. The sunsets at the point will compel you to stay a little longer! Check out Jeannie’s Sunrise B & B for a comfortable, bright, clean and well-regarded place you can call home while you are there. Jeannie is an exceptional host and cook; and very informed about the area’s richness. #Portauchoix #exploreNL #jeanniessunrise
Cod Culture Folk Art Folk art is a part of our Cod Culture. Cod culture can be defined as a way of life centered around all aspects of the fishery.... Many things make up a culture- including language, stories, vocabulary, speech, beliefs, music and most certainly, the arts. Here in NL, we have a rich fish history; and many of our artists are inclined to reflect that unique way of life in their artistic creations. Our Cod proud culture can be seen in these captivating pieces of folk art captured recently in Port au Choix. The talented artist is local resident Mario Ploughman. Amen to our Cod fish culture & the artists who keep our cool culture alive in their pieces. #Portauchoix #coolcodculture

2: Set against dramatic limestone barrens and bedrock that has preserved fossils for millions of years, The Port au Choix National Historic S...ite of Canada was the site of over 5,500 years of Indigenous settlement. Port au Choix is rich in natural resources needed to survive and it is no wonder that the Maritime Archaic Indians, Groswater Paleoeskimo, Dorset Paleoeskimo, as well as more recent Indigenous groups chose to occupy this place. Artifacts such as spearheads and bone needles have been recovered from Port au Choix after years of archaeological study. At Port au Choix you have the opportunity to explore the sites in which these people lived, and to learn more about their culture and way of life that developed over a millennia of habitation. While you’re there be sure to stop into the Heritage Shop where you can find products related to the site, products that depict wildflowers of the area, and more. Don’t forget that all the proceeds from the Heritage Shop go directly back to funding The Historic Sites Association initiatives, awards, and scholarships. https://www.historicsites.ca/port-au-choix #stayhome2020 #staycation #keepingourstoriesalive #newfoundlandandlabrador #nonprofit Newfoundland & Labrador Tourism Parks Canada Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador Newfoundland and Labrador Historic Trust

Visit Port au Choix and take in the French Bread Oven Program, daily at 2:00 pm (except Tuesday ). See how French fishermen used the stone oven to bake bread and share in a mug up of fresh bread topped with jams made from local berries.
