Still reflecting on the great talks at SXSW? We are! Emmanuel Acho reminds us that when designing for inclusion and access, defining the right problem and being clear on who we are designing for is key. In a human-centered design context, this illuminates the importance of the Define Phase the moment when stakeholders ground themselves in end users’ needs, and align on the what and the why of the design challenge. Perhaps even more importantly, this reminds us that to defin...e a truly human-centered challenge, inviting the people we are solving for to be active participants (and even leaders) of this phase is pivotal. When seeking to define a human-centric problem, consider: Who is at the table (and who is absent)? Why are we solving for this problem in the first place? What are the taken-for-granted truths that are guiding our problem solving? #innovation #design #research #experiencedesign #participatory #inclusion #humancentered #empathy #SXSW

Speculative Design a term coined by Anthony Dunne and Fiona Raby is a set of diverse tools, techniques and methods that live at the intersection of foresight and design. It aims to prompt new ways of thinking and solving for complex problems. Speculative designers often materialize alternative visions of the future through prototypes (or provotypes) as a way to engage end-users in conversations around possible futures. Based on the premise that everyone can be a futurist,... it gains insight into the impacts and experiences that may accompany these emerging futures. Great resource for a little crash-course on speculative design: Design Is [Speculative] Futures Design Thinking a new toolkit for preemptive design https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UB9UVHGI6AI Fiona Raby’s and Anthony Dunne’s book a foundational read on speculative design: Speculative Everything: Design, Dreaming, and Social Dreaming. #innovation #design #research #experiencedesign #speculativedesign

Last week Amrit paid it forward to the next-gen of social researchers at Ryerson's Criminology Program as a guest lecturer. She shared how storytelling through podcasting has allowed her to bring together skills from community volunteerism, her consulting practice, and academic training to gain a richer and deeper understanding of human needs. "Amrit's insights on her ethnographic training in Sociology are reflective of her career path and incredibly helpful for the students to gain exposure to." - Mandi Gray, Criminal Justice Research Methods and Statistics Instructor #research #ethnography #design #foresight #thoughtleadership #responsibility

This is a common question that comes up in pretty much any project that begins with design research. People and communities are often very eager for solutions that can help them navigate the struggles of daily life with disease - and existing health-care companies are uniquely set up to meet this need. What might building trust entail? Let’s start a conversation: What else is involved in building trust? What have we missed? #design #anthropology #foresight #innovation #chang...e #futures #research #experiencedesign #inclusion #womenshealth #representation #diversity #empathy #cocreation #codesign See more

Maya Dusenberg, a cultural medical journalist, is the author of Doing Harm. In her SXSW talk, she explores the lack of representation in clinical trials and how this works to create a Trust Gap: the tendency that medicine has to dismiss and minimize women’s symptoms as psychological (or all in your head). Medical Anthropology has studied how this Trust Gap also shapes the experience of BIPOC (Black Indigenous People of Color) communities - and how this gap has immense conse...quences on health outcomes; a matter of life or death. Biomedicine does not live outside of culture. Where have you seen these biases play out? #sxsw #design #anthropology #foresight #innovation #change #futures #research #experiencedesign #feminist #womenshealth #representation #trustgap #health #pharma

Micro bio João Augusto Fortes. Civil engineer, Environmentalist - Works in partnership with Chico Mendes, Ailton Krenak, among other Brazilian environmentalists; - His work lead to the Rio-92 taking place in Rio, Brazil; - Works on projects such as EcoMercado (1991-1995); Peoples of the Forest and Indigenous Culture Points Network (2003-2011); Vegetable Leather from the Amazon (products made of cloth and smeared latex, used by Indigenous rubber tappers in the Amazon) and the ...reforestation on the Upper Juruá River (Acre) with the Ashaninka of the Amônia River. What does this moment mean to you? A period of deep reflection. Every day counts. Yesterday I already lived, tomorrow does not exist yet, living is in the moment here and now. Many opportunities to turn inside, to meditate. What would you like to see change? Decreasing consumption by people. People valuing ‘being’ more than ‘having’. Greater respect of people, of others, for the environment in which they live (for animals, for nature and, for the planet), and even greater respect for themselves, becoming able to turn to their Inner Being. Where is this change currently happening? The invasions of Indigenous Lands in Brazil and the authorized killing of Indigenous people, the Quilombolas who live off the land, has appeared in the news every week and has brought attention to the valorization of indigenous cultures and the importance of these different cultures for everyone's life, even for non-indigenous. This series is a collaboration between Wake & Fresh Squeezed Ideas. Sister companies in Canada, USA, and Brazil. #emergingdesiredfutures #desiredfutures
