Bravo to the community for speaking up, just over a week ago, to fix Phase 1 of the new Transportation Plan! By a 9-2 vote last Monday April 26, Council directed staff and consultants WSP Canada to make the top 4 priorities of the new Transportation Plan the safety of the system, mode shift away from the car, greenhouse gas emission reductions, and maintenance of existing roads over expensive new road projects (like The Parkway). https://mailchi.mp//council-demands-changes-to-transportat
Speak up at Virtual Council TMRW! Tell Council our new transportation plan needs to be "outside the ordinary" instead of the ordinary, car-centric plan it's shaping up to be. We don't want to become a GTA-sprawl city, so why would we plan like one? . . CLICK link below for info & how to sign up to speak.... Just checked my emails- and the rally for SUNSET PARK has been moved from City Hall to Sunset Park itself. 3:00 - 5:30 p.m.
We have been approached by residents of the north end who are reaching out for support to save Sunset Park (one of the locations being considered for the new north end fire hall. Below you will find information regarding (a) the issues and concerns and (b) a summary of the rallies to be held this coming week and a request for community support: SAVE SUNSET PARK NO NEW FIRE HALL...Continue reading
URGENT ACTION NEEDED! (by Monday!): Get Parkway OUT of our new Official Plan! The City of Peterborough’s draft Official Plan to plan our city’s future to 2041 is out for review -- and unfortunately that draft includes a sneaky place-holder for the Parkway road extension. ... We at Friends of Jackson Park and Peterborough Greenspace Coalition say that the place-holder for the Parkway in the draft Official Plan (OP) is inappropriate and problematic. It presumes the outcome of the Transportation Master Plan update, which has not been completed and is at odds with public will and modern, sustainable urban planning principles. We request the City to: Remove reference to a Future High Capacity Arterial in the Schedule D map, including the cross-referenced box text stating Alignment to be determined through Master Transportation Planning Process. We don't want it, it is too costly, it doesn't fit the new OP, and it presumes that a road is needed and the best/only option. Make alternatives plus safety the stated transportation priorities, and do these first before considering any Parkway. These alternatives include: walking, cycling, transit, demand management, signals, smart traffic management systems and intersection improvements. Others may include ring roads to the east and/or west of the city. Make the Parkway extension route a greenway, designated as Open Space. Make sure that other policies do not support the Parkway extension in the background. NOW is the most important stage of the OP to give comments and make this change. We urge you to submit your concernsto the City, using the above points, or others. Due by this coming Monday, September 23 at the latest, please send your comments to [email protected] or fill out the online feedback form https://forms.peterborough.ca/Planni/Official-Plan-Feedback. Be sure to send a copy us, too, at: [email protected] so we can help track Parkway comments: Peterborough residents have repeatedly and emphatically rejected the Parkway. It is too expensive, it will harm Jackson Park, decimate the Rotary Greenway trail, and slice through our family neighbourhoods. It is an ugly relic of 20th century car-focused planning that has no place in our 21st century reality and Plan. And, it was halted under an Order from the Ministry of the Environment. Thanks for taking this critical action by THIS Monday September 23! Rob Steinman, Friends of Jackson Park Cam Douglas, Peterborough Greenspace Coalition
New signage want up on the Jackson Creek Trail recently. The trail will be closed starting September 17th to allow for construction of the sewer line from the n...ew Lily Lake subdivision to be buried under the trail to the new pumping station on Parkhill Road. See photos of signs posted below for further details. See more
I am currently reading "The Hidden Life of Trees" by a German Forester. He talks about the amazing ways trees communicate, but I wasn't quite prepared for what I found on in the Jackson Park woods a couple of days ago:
Trilliums were abundant this morning on the Forest Loop Trail in Jackson Park

This is the post I wrote after the incredible two nights of speeches in the Great Parkway Debate at Evenrude and ASVI, when Daryl and his followers voted to build a bridge through Jackson Park. We did NOT succeed in making that song heard the following October, it took four more years, but last night that dream was realized. THANK YOU enlightened voters of Peterborough you have resiscovered real democracy and elected a council with more YOUTH, WOMEN, DIVERSITY and WISDOM!
Why couldn't we have a PM like Elizabeth May?
Everything you want to know to make SUSTAINABLE CHOICES in the upcoming election. Featuring a REPORT CARD on the last CITY COUNCIL, as well as a survey on SUSTAINABLE ISSUES with responses from all ward candidates!
