The adorable dwarf pomegranate tree has produced fruit in the Temperate House at Allan Gardens! As a newly initiated member of the Lythraceae family, pomegranates now belong to the same plant family as loosestrifes and henna trees. Pomegranates were first cultivated in various regions of the Middle East and Asia. In both Farsi and Hindi, pomegranates are referred to as anar.

While Allan Gardens remains closed until further notice, the Blue Ginger plant (Dichorisandra thyrsiflora) in the Tropical House at Allan Gardens is blooming as beautiful as ever! Blue Ginger is native to the tropical forests of South America. Despite it's ginger-like appearance, Blue Ginger is not a type of ginger, but a kind of spiderwort - more closely related to wandering willie or purple heart. D. Teal

The leopard plants (Farfugium japonicum) are blooming in the Temperate House at Allan Gardens! Despite their best impressions, leopard plants aren’t actually leopards, but a member of the daisy family. Leopard plants are native to the seashores of Japan, where they’re known as tsuwabuki,, or stone lotus. Like Japanese pufferfish, leopard plants are toxic yet edible with the right preparations by a knowing chef. #leopardplant #asteraceae # #whatsinbloom

Unlike plants that grow in soil, these air plants (Tillandsia sp.) hanging out in the Orchid House at Allan Gardens get all their water and nutrients directly from their leaves! As a plant that grows on other plants (an epiphyte), the leaves of air plants are covered in a layer of fuzzy, hair-like cells called trichomes. Trichomes help the plant to absorb water and nutrients, as well as prevent dehydration. The natural habitat of Tillandsia plants ranges from Mexico’s deserts to the rain forests of Argentina. instagram.com/plantsandlucia

Top Tips for Indoor Chrysanthemum Care Provide bright, but filtered light. Direct sunlight can harm indoor chrysanthemums. Mums like moist (but not wet) soil. Check the soil moisture often. When the surface of the soil has become dry, it is time to water. Add water until it starts to come out the holes in the bottom of the pot and be sure to drain off any excess water.... Keep your plant in a cool spot away from heating vents or radiators. With proper care, chrysanthemums will last about 4-6 weeks indoors. Purchasing Tip: When you buy a chrysanthemum to bring indoors, buy a plant with tightly closed flower buds. The flowers will start to open once you bring the plant inside. This means you will have blooms to enjoy for a longer period of time. Allan Gardens Conservatory remains closed to the public at this time. Stay safe and be well everyone instagram.com/rvsteiner
