The Friends of Gage Park 09.11.2020

The Friends Of Gage Park Formed 1992 Raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to build: - The Spray Pad - The Play structure... - The Field House with the Gage Park Baseball Association. - Sponsored the reintroduction of the Rose Garden. Erected the monument (2013) to Howard Grubb and Lorrie Dunington. Volunteered thousands of Park hours on events, programs and plantings. Developed the Gage Park Master Plan in 2008 with the late Councilor Bernie Morelli to protect the Dunington/Grubb gardens. Howard Grubb and Lorrie Dunington Lorrie Dunington was the first female Landscape designer in Canada. A field she learned on her own as it was not taught to women. Howard Grubb and Lorrie Dunington married and moved from England to Toronto in 1911. In 1913 they opened Sheridan Nursery (holders of their pictorial designs). Many of their designs are National Historical sites: Park Wood, The R.S. McLaughlin Estate in Oshawa; The Gardens at Whitehern, Hamilton; The Gardens at Battlefield Park, Stoney Creek; The Oak Theater and Rainbow Gardens, Niagara Falls; Many other sites are protected such as University Avenue in Toronto. Hamilton has already lost two Dunington-Grubb Gardens, The Sunken Gardens at McMaster University, The Gardens at the west entrance of Hamilton. --------------- In this election year, ask your choice for Councilor and Mayor to find a more suitable location for the Fire Fighters Monument than in The Dunington-Grubb Formal Gardens. This can be a win, win for everyone. --------------- www.thefriendsofgagepark.ca
