Last week our team completed the gravel maintenance necessary for our shore-spawning Kokanee habitat restoration project! We shoveled and raked out clumps, and dispersed the gravel deeper into the water to reduce gravel pileup along the shoreline, allowing water to come up higher onto land. This will hopefully reduce the number of dewatered redds next spring during fry emergence when the water is at its lowest!

We want to send a massive THANK YOU to all who supported our efforts to clean up the east shore of Kootenay Lake over the month of April. This is a huge area to coordinate a cleanup in, but we were successful at getting almost all the target beaches cleaned!. We owe this good news to our amazing volunteers, partners, and funders. Thanks to Creston Valley Trails for assisting in the coordination of the event and arranging photo contest prizes.... Thanks to the East Shore Habitat Preservation Society for coordinating their volunteers and offering to pick up and dispose of large items of trash. Thanks to all the amazing volunteers who took the time to get out there and clean a water access location. And thank you to our funders, Regional District of Central Kootenay, Nelson and District Credit Union, and the Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program for making this event possible! Stay tuned for the announcement of the photo contest winners where we will be giving away prizes from local businesses. #kootenaylakecleanup2021
