Big Love to the Midwives of Muskoka on #internationaldayofthemidwife

Friends of Muskoka Midwives 25.03.2021

CALL TO ACTION on the eve of INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE MIDWIFE News of Laurentian University cutting #midwifery programs has been part of our news feed for several weeks now. Please find below a heartfelt message from Lyanne Pinto, a former MoMer and LU grad (as was Melissa and Natalie!), and take a moment to add your name to the provided petition to help advocate for these programs to stay in Northern Ontario. This simple act can pay homage to our beloved Midwives on the ...eve of #internationaldayofthemidwife and support those who hope to follow in their footsteps I was terribly shocked and saddened to hear about the last minute closure of the Laurentian University's Midwifery Education Programme on April 13th. A programme that could only admit 10% of its applicants. I am a LU grad. I was a french and northern student. Just thinking about the little 17-18 year old me, I know that back then, even though I had passion for my future career like no other, I doubt that I would have applied to an english school. As a Francophone, especially back then when I was shy to speak any english, it would have added to the challenge of being a midwifery student, to write papers in english... who knows if I could of passed in an english program. And look at the ripple effects of one francophone northern student: I have studied mostly in rural Ontario, started to work in rural Ontario (Muskoka ) and moved to rural BC (Cowichan District) and then moved to Ottawa to work at a francophone clinic and the only francophone hospital in all of Ontario (there are 50 englophone hospitals in Qc to give you perspective) where I am now the head midwife. At least 50% of my clients are francophones and specifically ask for french speaking midwives.... because when one is in labour, it's not easy to communicate in your 2nd or 3rd language. LU has graduated many students like me. LU's midwifery programme was also the school that had indigenous students. Please consider reading and signing this petition to keep a French, northern and indigenous programme a possibility so that these communities can continue to receive the option of midwifery care. Please share widely. https://forms.gle/wBwyzhAthSN7ySUE9

Hello fellow FYCuppers- we hope you got some time over the weekend to tune into a session or two of our #virtualhomeedition on Podia! We also are thrilled that both LIVEs thus far have had upwards of 30 attendees, though we have also received some inquiries as to why our LIVE Sessions with our Presenters is not being recorded and emailed out, and we would like to take a moment to set the record straight: Primarily, the goal of our LIVEs are to give us the sense of community a...nd "togetherness" in a time where we are forced to stay at home. It was heartwrenching for us to not be able to host you all in person as planned back in April, but FOMM tried to soften the blow by offering ALL the sessions to you instead of just the 3 you were originally signed up for. A pretty thoughtful way to 'make it up to you' so we thought, while still receiving your original choices and that sweet Experience Bag - nothing to be missed! Secondly, our Presenters all volunteer their time for FYC and an additional LIVE session to ask questions and clarify some of the information is a BONUS, just like the additional content and handouts/readings they provide over Podia. They have to make the LIVEs work with their family/work life as well, so we are trying to be respectful to all involved. Lastly, there is a huge question of liability that we can't ask every person who attends the LIVEs to sign a waiver to then release their image and comment into a recording- it gets far too complicated on our end and essentially not the point of a LIVE session. Our Presenters have all said in their workshops that you can reach out to them whenever you need to, and if you can not make the LIVEs, we encourage you to do so in this manner should you need any guidance. In the hopes that you can plan accordingly to attend the LIVE sessions you wish to follow up with from here on out, please accept this schedule of LIVEs as our peace offering: Feb 17th@Noon- Karen & Kristen (Family Finances) Feb 25th@7pm- Holly (Yoga) March 3rd@Noon- Laura (Perinatal Health) March 16@7:30pm - Fyonna (Goals & Journaling) April 1st@8pm- Amy & Emma (Expression Sessions) April 12th@7:30pm- Ali (Sleep) April 26th@7:30- Brittany (Pelvic Health) Week of May 3rd TIME/DATE TBA- Tracey (Self Love & Acceptance) May 19th@7pm- Dani (Stress & the Brain) Week of May 30th TIME/DATE TBA- Laurie (Forest Bathing)
