Good morning to all you Tree Tappers!! Hope your tapping projects are going well...with the warm temperatures this week it will be interesting to see how the sap flows...as it is warmer keep your sap cool! Thanks to eveyone who has supported the Friends of Pippy Park by buying spiles from us! Stay safe.

To all you tree tappers...check your buckets/containers today...the wind is fierce but hopefully with the temperature changes there will be good sap flow! Looking ahead to the end of the season...when you remove the taps, gather them and your containers...give them a good wash with a drop of bleach in the water, rinse and dry well before storing. Makes it easier for next season.

So...it is Paddy's Day and people are talking about leprechauns, Pots of Gold ....so all you Maple Tree Tappers...shows us your Pots of Gold....here is mine...

I was boiling yesterday...thought my syrup was 'done' but my thermometer said otherwise. So I checked it by putting it in a pot of boiling water...it was out by 10...so a goid thing to do every now and then is to check it!! Happy Tapping!!

The first maple workshop is one week from today! (Sat Mar 2). The cold weather might mean tapping season starts a late but let's get ready for it all the same. We'll have brand new stainless steel taps (spiles) on hand, which we are selling for Friends of Pippy Park to fund our purchase of an evaporator for maple syrup season activities. Do you want to meet the brand new baby goat kids? Do you like maple syrup? It's time once again for our annual series of maple syrup workshops! Starting MARCH 2. Come on out, learn how maple syrup is made and how to make your own delicious maple syrup right from your own backyard. Maple the goat and her two brand new kids Ella & John will be in attendance! We will also be holding a limited number of private workshops aimed at delivering this content to youth groups and clas...ses. One of the best parts about Pippy Park's maple tapping season is the delicious maple syrup. Another one is Maple the Maple syrup goat!! Did you know yesterday was Maple's birthday? She gave birth to two baby kids on her birthday yesterday. Come and meet the kids at this year's Maple Syrup workshops! Details on times for public workshops, and private workshops for classes & youth oriented groups, will be posted in February

We received funding from the Canada Summer Jobs program to hire two students for eight weeks to work in the Family Garden, assist on the walking trails, and help with park improvement projects! Resumes will be accepted until June 21, 2018 at [email protected].

Come celebrate a successful maple syrup season with the Friends of Pippy Park! April 8th (12-4pm) marks the 4th annual Maple Syrup Festival - where we get together to showcase what maple syrup making is all about, and draw together the year's hobby producers for an informal chat and even a tasting competition. Some of this year's Pippy Park maple syrup will be in the boil, and there will be samples for everyone to have a tadte and see how this year's crop of sweet syrup turn...ed out. Some wonderful prizes, such as Pippy Park maple syrup, wildflower honey, and even a very special bottle of vintage blueberry maple mead, will be raffled as door prizes and also given away to the winning entry in our 'maple syrup tasting competition'! Maple the Goat (and friends!) will also be in attendance, so bring a piece of fresh fruit or vegetable to give her a treat! Grade 2 class up in the Friends of Pippy Park Maple Grove, learning all about tapping trees to make maple syrup!!

What a lovely time today up in the Friends of Pippy Park Maple Grove, doing our last public workshop on maple tree tapping for the season. Over 120 people came out, and there was even another goat there for Maple to meet! Thank you to everyone who supported the Pippy Park maple syrup project this year. We've still got a full slate of field trip workshops planned for youth, and of course the Maple Syrup Festival on April 8th - where I hope to see everyone who has tapped their trees, whether this year was your first time or whether you're a seasoned pro!!

What a great turnout for our first maple tapping demo of 2018, over 150 people came out to learn all about making your own maple syrup. The sap is flowing and maple season is now underway!
