Cornell Lab of Ornithology AtpSrarhttipl u2mfh3r datg 4mmgoi:ood5no9 PlsoreMd Migration alert! Millions of birds will be flying through night skies this weekend. It should make for fantastic birdwatching in the brightly colored parts of the maps in this image. It's also a critically important time to turn out lights at night, to help migrating birds stay on course and away from deadly window collisions. The picture demonstrates another species that makes it's home in the Coves ESA is also skilled at sewing. The picture shows a nest constructed in the Black Maple on Brookdale Ave. Last spring (2020). Three fledglings were raised in the nest and were looked after by both the Mom and Dad. (Baltimore Orioles) You will note that the nest is able to move and swing like a bag.

Many thanks to Margaret Hopkins for arranging the delivery of the wood chips to refurbish the trails along the East Cove and then arranging the help necessary to get the wood chips to the places where they are needed. You are someone who makes a difference!

The Cove has inspired generations of amateur/professional artists and to demonstrate this we would like to provide you with some examples. The first one is a WC painted by Vesey-Brown from a collection held in the Regional Room of Weldon Library at the UWO. It is a view from the north shore of the Thames River looking south from just under the bridge where the CNR mainline railway passes over the main branch of the Thames River.

Has anyone seen any of these anywhere in the Coves ESA? If so please give us a shout! Thom

Pollinator populations all over the world are declining due to threats from invasive species, climate change, land use change, and many other stressors. It’s un-bee-lievable! One important way to support pollinators in their time of need is to plant native species, particularly host plants for native butterflies and moths Check out the links below to learn more about what host plants are and what kinds of pollinators they support in Southwestern Ontario. You may be surpri...sed how much you can do to help out pollinators in your own backyard! https://onnaturemagazine.com/butterfly-and-moth-guide.html https://www.toronto.ca//969e-Biodiversity_ButterfliesBook- https://trca.ca//ButterflyGardensFactshet_FINALapprovedJul https://caroliniancanada.ca//native-butterfly-host-and-nec https://conservationhalton.ca/optimize-garden-butterflies

If you teach students in grades 4 through 7 or if you're just looking for some outdoor educational activities, check out the Living Laboratory of the Coves booklets on the Coves website. These booklets were created by Heather Jensen, a Masters of Environment and Sustainability student at Western University who is completing her summer co-op with Friends of the Coves. The Living Laboratory activities align with curriculum expectations in the Arts, Health and Physical Education..., Science and Technology, and Social Studies. Each grade has a teacher booklet containing relevant curriculum standards, activity descriptions, and supporting materials in addition to a companion student booklet consisting of photographs, maps, and space for drawing and writing prompts. There is also a French version of the grade 4 student booklet. The Living Laboratory is designed to help kids get outside, engage with the history of the Coves, learn about local ecosystems, and enjoy the natural world while giving teachers more options to incorporate environmental education in all elements of learning. We hope you enjoy it!

As of today, 122 respondents have filled out the Coves Environmentally Significant Area survey. Thank you! Participants have indicated a strong desire to conserve the Coves ecosystem, expand protected areas, and connect trails while raising concerns over the health of the ponds, litter, and invasive species. For many people, the Coves represent an escape from the stress of everyday life and a chance to appreciate the natural world. Friends of the Coves is looking forward to incorporating this feedback into future management projects. If you would like to add your voice to this discussion, please click the link below. The survey will remain open until August 3, 2020.
