With the cold winter weather approaching, it's time to protect and start winterizing your rain barrels Here's how: 1. Empty and rinse the rain barrel with a ...garden hose. 2. Remove the spigot or leave it in the open position. 3. Disconnect all hoses and consider placing them and the spigot inside the barrel. 4. To ensure water does not enter the rain barrel, consider turning it upside down/on its side OR Consider storing the barrel in a basement, garage or under a deck. Do not permit water to enter the barrel during winter. Water expands when it freezes and even a small amount can cause a rain barrel to crack.
