Wednesday, June 3, 2020 Lakeside Park, Port Dalhousie, St. Catharines, Ontario The Friends of the Lakeside Park Carousel have been working closely with The City of St. Catharine’s Parks and Recreation department to assess, given the COVID-19 health pandemic, if and when it would be feasible to open The Lakeside Park Carousel this season. As presented to City Council in the City Facility Re-Opening Plan, The Lakeside Park Carousel will remain closed for the 2020 season:... Staff have identified a number of concerns regarding the safe operation of the carousel given increased health and safety, and social distancing protocols. Included within those concerns are the ability for staff to properly clean and disinfect the carousel while correctly preserving its physical characteristics (paint, etc.) and staff’s ability to enforce social distancing within the enclosed environment. As a result, the City will not open the Carousel for the 2020 season. This was not a decision that was easy, however safety for staff, riders, and the Carousel Characters are always the top priority - we’d like to make sure that this historic and beloved part of our community is here for folks to enjoy and make memories on for many more years to come, explains Katherine Nelson-Riley, Communications and Public Relations Director for The Friends of the Carousel. Seven year old Carousel lover Miller shares, I LOVE the Carousel whatever we have to do to protect the Carousel, then that’s what we’ll do! Bonnie Cameron, president of The Friends of the Carousel says, ‘Temporary closure for our beloved Carousel unfortunately is part of our ‘new normal’ of closures and restrictions. Safety for the carousel, our rider’s and staff is a must! Annnndddd ... we’re open! Woo hoo!! The three who made sure they were first in line ... to The Friends of the Carousel waiting for the doors to open... to the smiles, laughter, memories shared and memories made... come on down! Open until 8pm this evening!! 11am-8pm daily through Labour Day Monday... Then... 11am-6pm weekends only through Thanksgiving Monday... Still 5cents a ride!!
