Northern Pulp told a BC Court they plan to consult the community via a hand-picked committee of 12 people from different sectors to list, prioritize and find solutions to community environmental issues - in 4 weeks. Allan McCarthy of the Northumberland Fishermen's Association says "This committee is not about consultation. Northern Pulp is setting up a process where they write the rules, pick the players, decide who can be consulted, and set the timelines." Jill Graham-Scanlan of FONS says Northern Pulp seems to be trying to do an end-run around the Environmental Assessment laws. It sounds like a case of ‘when you don’t like the rules, make your own.' The premier faced heavy backlash from the forestry industry with a protest held on the doorstep of the legislature calling for the premiers to grant Northern Pulp an extension, and many blamed McNeil for the subsequent downturn in the forestry industry. Graham-Scanlan says that blame is misguided. Certainly the blame for that treatment facility not being approved to date rests squarely with Northern Pulp, she said.

allNovaScotia also reported on this story. and indicated that the smaller loan, $15 million vs the $50 million NP requested, keeps the province in the position to take back the insolvent mill and half a million acres of woodland should NP's "restructuring plan" fail.

"But the money comes with strings attached. It would be paid out in installments that are advances on the following milestones being reached reached by 2022: An environmental approval to build a replacement effluent treatment plant. An agreement with the province to help fund its design and construction. A court decision or negotiated settlement with the province paying lost profits and damages associated with the idling of the kraft pulp mill." ... - Chronicle Herald
