From our preschool: It’s been so beautiful to see our studio coming to life with our chalk explorations. Almost everyday by small groups, children have an encounter with chalk and it’s many possibilities... By now they are experts in crushing it with different tools and almost daily a new way is discovered: You can crush the tiny pieces with a big piece, or with your knees, knees are hard, you can also jump on them they break but the big pieces hurt, the tiny ones don’t... Soon enough we have mountains of chalk and colourful dust starts flowing through tiny fingers and toes over and overThis flow really seems to be what captures them. Each child interacts with it in their own unique way there’s this wonderful dance between getting to deeply discover chalk in its many forms, and seeing it as a representation of their individual experiences; chalk dust can be a snow, the beach, fire dust... Emma wondered if we could use chalk dust to make mud I think we just add water and mix it and then it’s like mud The next day, I decided to present the water in spray bottles as a way to prevent a flood running from the loft to the classroom. With this new addition, some problems were encountered: How to best maneuver the spray bottles? How many sprays do you need to make it muddy? Why can’t we just dump the water on the dust? Or can we? Some children simply enjoyed the unexpected change in vibrancy of the colour as they sprayed the water It’s a sunset! yelled Isaac Some started to mold it into round shapes I think we can make the dust be chalk again, suggested Hattie. They left the balls of mud chalk to dry overnight and they really did look and worked like chalk! The children were excited that their theory worked and I wondered if they would set out to make lots more the next day after seeing the results. They made just a couple more, and then they went back to crushing and piling and making the chalk jump and dance again.

You must have heard about BRAIDING SWEETGRASS, a must-read book on Indigenous wisdom, scientific knowledge and the teachings of plants in the year 2020. As a botanist, Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer has been trained to ask questions of nature with the tools of science. As a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, she embraces the notion that plants and animals are our oldest teachers. A great opportunity to join the conversation with her in the coming UBC free event to learn more about the topic.
