It matters. It matters where your horse goes for training. When I was a young intern with some of the best trainers in the world (I won’t share names/barns...), this type of raking was more common than not. In fact I really don’t recall a horse in the barn without some sort of swelling, bruising or bloody sides or mouths. It matters. I also remember going to the shows with said horses worrying about what people would say what a ring steward would say But no one, NO ONE, ever said one thing about it. How did they not see these marks on the horses? Why was no one saying anything? Money? Prestige? I still don’t understand. It matters. I left that world as soon as my required internships were up and I never worked for another trainer like that again. The longer I train, the more and more I realize there is a better way. And the better way can get just as impressive sliding stops, spins or piaffes. But it may cost you a 3 year old futurity. More often than not, if you are a fan of the better ways, you are also full of love and empathy for the animal, not just the sport. So you’re going to look for ways to keep a horse sound. Bring them up right. And slow. It matters. I want to be a Horseman, not a trainer. A horseman respects the horse. Mind, body, soul. We all have to make a living. But as a horseman I am always upfront with people about how I view quick fixes or demanded results. I don’t play that game. It matters. We can all keep learning better ways. We can all work to change the industry. We can choose the trainers we send our horses to. And we can alert others to bad practices. Always be a steward to the horse first, sport second. We can all do better. It matters. These horses matter. A relationship built on trust is always stronger than a relationship built on truce. *I do not own this photo; I was given permission to use*

Ya'll, it is officially small futurity season, and we really need to look out for each other. We need to look out for the amateurs cracking out on futurity hors...es for the first time after only riding weekend show horses their whole careers. We need to look out for the lopers having to take the reins to the program's best three year old that just ran off in the show pen. Bring 'em a coffee, clean a stall for them. But, we especially need to look out for those trainers, you know the ones, the ones that are starting to dig deep because they have a three year old that really isn't turning with a cow. The superstitious ones... "Maybe if I only work the flag at 3:33 pm each day and only wear red when working cattle, they'll start turning with a cow." The inventive ones... "Maybe if I work chickens they'll brighten up and hook to a cow better in the show pen." The nervous ones... "We gotta get this thing sold before we step to the herd. Start calling people Leanne, call the team ropers down the road, those team penners we met, what about that calf roper? Is he looking? He's small enough, maybe he'd make a hunter pony. Where's your old English saddle? Let's bust that out and take some photos.." The ones that have surrendered... "It'll be what it'll be, and hopefully it'll be the one time this sucker turns with a cow for two minutes and thirty seconds." The optimistic ones... "He's been running off steady for about four months, but I think he just wants to be a show horse." No matter which one, we gotta look out for those trainers. Happy small futurity season, may your horse always turn with a cow... and if they do, may they always be stylish to boot. --- : Krystina Lynn Photography

Look up your horse---

"Dont you feel sorry for me? I hate that I'm locked up and can't have all that lush green grass." No, I dont feel sorry for you. I'm ecstatic! I'm estatic that... I'm not trimming a mini that's in a founder stance and in EXTREME pain. I'm estatic that I'm not suggesting to the owners that it would be best for you to be PTS because they dont restrict your pasture grass. Im estatic that your chronically foundered, formerly elf shaped feet, are not hot and you dont have a digital pulse. I'm ecstatic that after I took your halter off you wandered off without pain looking for something to nibble. And I'm grateful to her owner for tough love! How does laminitis feel for the horse? It's like smashing every one of your toes with a sledge hammer, inflammation of the lamina (the 2 layers under the hoof wall), repeatedly. What about founder? Keep applying the sledge hammer effect until your bones break. It's very painful and preventable. "But there's nothing out there ( in the pasture) for them to eat"....it may appear that way, but they are contually eating it down. Dont mow your lawn for a week and you will see how fast the grass is growing. If your horses are grass sensitive, prone to laminitis and/or have foundered in the past, your already late, please get them off the rich spring grass.
