******WE WILL REMEMBER****** ******D-DAY 75 YEARS****** 75 years ago today, the combined Allied military forces of the United States, Great Britain and her Dominion of Canada (and several other nations) partook in Operarion Overlord, better known as D-Day. It was the greatest amphibious invasion in the history of warfare, and marked the start of the final liberation of Europe from the Nazi menace. Nearly 150,000 (14,000 Cdn.) young men of the rightfully called "greatest ge...neration" stormed the beaches (or jumped behind the lines) of Normandy, France, marching fearlessly into firey hell, offering their youthful lives, that we might live in freedom and peace, safe from tyrants and their sinister oppression of the rights of man. They were our finest, our fiercest, and out truest. Embodiment of the Anglosphere, of Christiandom each and every one, heros to whom a debt is forever owed and yet repayed. From the Sailors on the ships, the Soldiers on the beaches, the Airman in the skies, the Paratroopers dropped in the night before, to all the families praying on the home front... each and every son gave it their all, with the hope that we would do something with what they left for us. Hard fought, the outcome of the invasion was an Allied foothold on mainland Europe, from which the final push against the enemy was launched. Victory however came at the price of over 10,000 Allied casualties (1,074 Cdn.) with 4,414 (359 Cdn.) giving their lives in service and eternal sacrifice to God, King, and Country. It is estimated that between 4-9,000 fell on the German side, young men caught up in that same terrible conflict. There is so much to be said of these men, and of what this day, D-Day, represents. But in all truth, it represents what we, the decendants, the inheritors of the causes they fought for, choose to do with such a priceless heritage. Study. Read. Learn the history, their stories and keep it alive... for lest we forget. Happy VE Day! Victory in Europe! On this day, the 8th of May, 1945; The peoples of the Allied nations rejoiced at the surrender of the Third Reich. British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill addressed the Empire with these still vital words: "My dear friends, this is your hour. This is not victory of a party or of any class. It’s a victory of the Great British nation as a whole. We were the first, in this ancient island, to draw the sword against tyranny.......Wherever the... bird of freedom chirps in human hearts, look back to what we’ve done and they will say do not despair, do not yield to violence and tyranny, march straightforward and die if need be-unconquered. May these words stir our hearts in the conservation and promotion of our heritage, and may their victory, our victory not have been won in vain. The lives of over 42,000 Canadians were laid down with another 55,000 forever wounded, for God, King and Empire. We will Remember. Lest we forget~God Save our Queen! #VEDay #VictoryInEurope #Victory #NoSurrender #LestWeForget #CanadaRemembers #RememberThem (Photo: Sir Winston Churchill greets a victorious nation from the balcony of the ministry of health, VE Day 1945)
