We're hearing from you that flea beetles are out now. These tiny black, hard-bodied beetles feed on brassicas. Vegetables like: cabbage, kale, Brussels sprouts,... cauliflower, kohlrabi, broccoli, pak choi and radishes as well as annuals like stock, alyssum, lobularia and nasturtium. Flea beetles particularly like feeding on the cotelydons (the first leaves) that emerge from newly germinating seeds. Here is a demo of a pesticide-free way to get rid of them. Here's how we did it at the U of S Rooftop Vegetable garden. Joel is using a wet/dry shop vac to clean up an infestation of flea beetles on his fat pod radish crop. Note that he is using a soft brush attachment to protect the plants and he put an inch of water in the shop vac to catch the insects. After vacuuming, cover plants with row cover secured at the edges to keep them off your plants. This method works well for other hard bodied insects like maple bugs and Colorado potato beetle.
