Today a dear friend of mine, a dancer David Blue posted that he had just seen the movie, Xanadu that I danced in back in 1980, so I wanted to share a short stor...y of that experience. In early June, 1980 I decided to move to the west coast so I packed up, left Toronto, and drove to L. A. When I arrived I immediately started calling all the local dance studios asking if anyone knew of any auditions coming up. When I called the Debbi Reynolds studio in North Hollywood the receptionist told me she hear about an audition for a film at Universal Studios. She said..."10am, Male dancers this Thursday and Women on Friday. When I arrived on Thursday at the soundstage I found out that the audition was for the film Xanadu starring Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly. Wow! I just couldn't believe it! (Gene Kelly was my idol as a very young dancer) The soundstage was filled with all female dancers...hundreds of the them and I thought hmmmmm..this is strange! To say the least I stuck out like a sore thumb! Instead of leaving I walked right up to the choreographer, Kenny Ortega, and introduced myself. I explained what happened, he chuckled, and after a brief conversation he said come tomorrow at 10. The next day when I arrived it was filled with hundreds of male dancers. As luck would have it he saw me in the back of the crowd and pulled me up front where I stayed to the very end, booked the gig, and got my SAG-AFTRA card! That was the very last movie that the brilliant Gene Kelly made. I made so many contacts from that job that I worked non-stop for close to a year! Hello everyone, As most of you already know, there are new measures announced yesterday by our BC health officer Bonnie Henry regarding Covid 19. At this time E...ileen and I feel that it's in the interest of everyone that it will now be mandatory for everyone coming to the studio to wear a mask at all times. All other guidelines will still be in place including sanitizing, physical distancing, and limited numbers of no more than 10 people in the studio at any time. I know that this is not the best news but the great thing is we still get to have fun dancing while being safe and responsible. Please be safe everyone! :) Sincerely, Stelio and Eileen
