Dr. Andrea Braithwaite's work defining a new kind of detective in pop culture -- the "chick" detective -- is one of the articles selected for the very first issue of Mean Streets: A Journal of American Crime and Detective Fiction. In her piece, "Janet Evanovich and the Rise of the Chick Detective," Dr. Braithwaite looks at what happens when chick lit meets the hardboiled mystery, and what this tells us about gender, genre, and crime. Broken Hearts, Empty Shoes/Cœurs brisés, chaussures vides Canadians for Long-Term Care Standards, a day to honour those we have lost and support the federal government in creating national standards with the provinces and territories. We will have a small group (no more than 25 people in person) attending at Parliament Hill in Ottawa on November 19, 2020 for a demonstration in support of national standards for long-term care, and to honour those we have lost in long-term care... across Canada. The event will begin at 11:30 and will be live streamed for safety reasons due to COVID-19 (details to follow), ending between 12:30 and 1:00. We will be laying out thousands of empty shoes across the lawn of Parliament Hill to honour those we have lost due to COVID-19 in Canadian long-term care homes. We know that many people across Canada have experienced systemic issues in long-term care for much longer than this pandemic, but we have seen COVID-19 ravage our long-term care homes in a big way, bringing these issues front and centre. We need better care for the most vulnerable members of our population. The time is now. You can livestream the event on facebook: https://fb.me/e/2ZO2kf
