The Superficial Back Line (SBL): In describing anatomy, most of us are familiar with the skeletal, circulatory, immune, and digestive systems, along with muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Fascia, unfortunately, is frequently omitted from this list. Briefly described, fascia is a complex matrix of connective tissue. In a healthy state, it appears willowy like a spider’s web, and functions to bind the other systems together. Every structure in the body (organs, muscles, arter...ies, veins, and nerves) is either connected to, or enveloped by, fascia. There are 12 fascial nets (or meridians) in the body, one of which is the Superficial Back Line (SBL). . The SBL starts at the soles of the feet, travels up the heel (calcaneus) to the calves (including the Achilles Tendon), connects the hamstrings to the pelvis (ischial tuberosity and sacrum), continues up both sides of the spine / neck to the base of the skull (occipital ridge), goes over the top of the head (epicranial fascia), and stops just above the eyebrows (supraorbital ridge). . The overall function of the SBL is to support the body in an upright, standing position (extension) and hyperextension. The SBL is one of the first fascial nets to develop, as evidenced when an infant learns to lift its head when laying on their stomach. Ultimately, the SBL will develop to achieve stability, leading to standing and walking independently. Coincidentally, it is also one of the first lines to be affected in the aging process, as evidenced in developing a posture of thoracic flexion. . If any area of the line (or net) is compromised, then the integrity of the entire net is affected, e.g., the cause of your neck pain / headaches may actually be in your feet. Nothing in the body works in isolation. Pain will always follow the path of least resistance. Tight fascia pulls tissues out of alignment, resulting in pain, discomfort, and reduced range of motion. Frequently, compensatory movement patterns are also manifested. . Treating the SBL can improve balance, alleviate plantar fasciitis, tight calves and hamstrings, reduce / eliminate back pain, treat various neck issues, and reduce the intensity and frequency of headaches, to name a few. . #anatomytrains #neck #neckpain #backpain #headache #lowbackpain #tighthamstrings #tightcalves #sorefeet #plantarfasciitis #fst #fascialstretchtherapy #posture #posturematters #balance #superficialbackline #fascialrelease #StandStraight #myofascialrelease See more

The Arm Lines : According to Thomas Myers’ Anatomy Trains, there are 4 distinct fascial Arm Lines; (1) the Superficial Front Arm Line (2) the Deep Front Arm Line (3) the Superficial Back Arm Line and (4) the Deep Back Arm Line. Succinctly, these various lines encompass the fingers, thumb, back of the hand, palm, wrist, elbow, shoulder, chest, neck and areas of the back. . Although these arm lines display many crossover patterns, due to their unique mobility actions as req...uired by the shoulders, they are logically arranged in their deep and superficial nets. Succinctly, the arm lines are named for their placement as they cross the shoulder. . Typically, when any area of the body is experiencing pain or discomfort, one may look to focusing treatment to just that area. In terms of Fascial Stretch Therapy, we look at the body as whole, recognizing that nothing in the body functions alone or in isolation. . Pain will always follow the path of least resistance. The area where pain in being expressed, may or may not be where the cause of the issue originates. Pain is merely the symptom. . For example, carpal tunnel syndrome typically presents as wrist pain, however, the cause may be a neck issue. Golfer’s Elbow and Tennis Elbow tend to express pain at the elbow, however, the cause may actually reside above or below the elbow. Typically, reduced grip strength, as in holding a golf club, tennis racquet, or simply lifting a cup of coffee, is an issue that would affect, and thereby be alleviated by, treating various areas of the arm lines. . Fascia is connective tissue that is integrated throughout the body. It surrounds and connects every organ, blood vessel, bone, nerve fiber and muscle. Fascia is also innervated, thus enabling it to tighten. Tight fascia will cause pain, discomfort and/or reduced range of motion. Many things can negatively affect fascia, including lack of physical activity, repetitive movements, trauma, injury and/or surgery. . . #fascialstretchtherapy #golferselbow #tenniselbow #reducedgrip #sorearms #carpaltunnel #carpaltunnelsyndrome #painrelief #sorehands #headaches #backpain #shoulderpain #soreback #backpain #theclubatwhiteoaks #fstwithtiina #tightforearms #golf #tennis .

On February 23, 2021, golf legend Tiger Woods was involved in a horrific, single vehicle accident in which he sustained multiple fractures in his lower right leg. Specifically, he reportedly sustained comminuted open fractures to both the upper and lower portions of his tibia and fibula, as well as significant injuries to his ankle. To explain, a comminuted fracture occurs when a bone breaks in two or more fragments, and an open fracture occurs when the bone breaks through th...e skin. . To effectively manage Tiger’s leg fractures, surgery was performed with the insertion of rods, pins and plates to stabilize the affected areas. In addition, a fasciotomy was performed. A fasciotomy is a surgical release of the fascia to relieve pressure due to swelling. It is typically performed prophylactically to prevent serious problems from developing, including restricted blood flow and death of the soft tissues. Although fascia is one of the most profound systems in the body (equally as important as blood, nerves or skin), it is one of the least studied and possibly, the most neglected and least treated. . Tiger allegedly had fascial restrictions long before the accident. It has been reported that he withdrew from participating in a golf tournament in February 2020 due to issues (tightness) in the area of his thoracolumbar fascia (mid-low back). A PGA trainer reported on Tiger and explained that fascial restrictions and back issues are common with golfers, due to the repetitive swing motion. . Tight, restricted fascia renders discomfort and dysfunction; healthy, pliable fascia renders optimal health, function and well-being. . Although fascia is an integral component of our anatomical structure, most people have neither heard of, nor experienced, the powerful benefits of Fascial Stretch Therapy (FST). FST is a gentle, table-based assisted stretching technique which focusses on releasing the fascia and joint capsule. These are some of the key elements in achieving optimal flexibility, strength, performance, and pain relief. . #fstwithtiina #fasciaphysio_niagara #golf #tightfascia #soreback #lowbackpain #tigerwoods #theclubatwhiteoaks #stretchtherapy #painrelief #golfswing #golfinjuries #fst #fascialstretchtherapy #fascialrelease #flexibility #strengthtraining #thoracolumbarfascia #pain #discomfort See more

Fascial Stretch Therapy and the Immune System: . . Helen Langevin, Professor at Harvard Medicine and University of Vermont, and respected author of many research papers on connective tissue, considers fascia as the home of the immune system. Fascia is a type of connective tissue that surrounds all muscles, bones and organs. It also connects different parts of the body together, as well as providing structure and coordinated movement. -... - Lymphatic channels run through fascia; fascia is to the lymphatic system what the heart is to the vascular system. - - Immune system function is linked to circulation and hydration. A large component of our immune response occurs in the fascia. The initial immune system defense is a generalized response, .ie., the area of infection is isolated and attacked in the fascia. In order for this aspect of the immune system to work effectively, the fascia must be well-hydrated. This defence is compromised with dehydrated fascia, and during times of stress, thereby weakening the immune system response. - - When fascia is healthy, ie., well-hydrated and slippery, lymphatic fluid flows through its surroundings easily. Consequently, the immune cells within the lymph fluid are able to fight infections. - - Fascial Stretch Therapy assumes a global view of the body and movement. It is a hands-on, assisted table-based therapy. Unlike regular stretching, Fascial Stretch Therapy continuously moves the patient through various ranges of motion. By implementing proper breathing techniques, it also helps target the parasympathetic nervous system, thereby allowing for greater relaxation and stretch response. - - By reducing stress and activating the parasympathetic nervous system, circulation and hydration increase, which can strengthen immune system function. - - Healthy fascia is helps build your immune system. In addition to implementing the recommendations for protecting yourself against Covid-19, consider Fascial Stretch Therapy as an adjunct therapy to naturally build your immune system. #fstwithtiina #fasciaphysio_niagara #stressreliever #immunesystem #theclubatwhiteoaks #stretchtherapy #fascialstretchtherapy #chronicpain #relax
