Did you know that Amazon has a program that allows sellers to send inventory to one fulfillment centre as opposed to sending inventory to multiple fulfillment centres? This is called the Amazon placement program. Sounds like a great idea right? Why would a seller want to manage the distribution of their inventory? We have a story to share that will shed light on the Amazon placement program. A customer had reached out and couldn’t understand why their placement fees were so... high. Amazon’s website indicated that the price was only $1.30 per unit plus 20 cents per pound. What she didn’t take into account was Amazon calculated your product weight by taking the greater of the volume weight and actual weight. The volume weight of her product was 13 lbs compared to the product only weighing 2 lbs! This resulted in a placement fee of over $1,400 for only 3 skids of product!
