FULL RANGE GANG SIGN ... Not exactly! Elliot showing off his clinodactyly. The point is that everybody's body is different. Not everyone is going to move the same. It's up to us to learn how to best move and maintain the body we have, and that means often working with unique traits that may have us moving differently than the norm. Learn how to move well, then engage with that movement regularly!
It's all about balance! Life can get hectic with all of our priorities. Here's Elliot working on his work-life balance. Nailed it.
Neutral spine control! This is a basic movement pattern that should be ingrained in our nervous system. If this move is challenging, then practicing it to make it second nature is paramount! Grab a stick, line it up along your spine with contact points at your sacrum, upper back, and back of the skull (I shaved my head so you could see this clearly...). Don't crane your neck! Fingers between your lower back and stick should be contacting both surfaces. Then slo...wly hinge forward while maintaining some core tension. If moving through this causes any of the contact points to change, you're losing neutral spine alignment while you move, which could make it more likely that injury can happen during lifts such as squats and deadlifts. Power is nothing without control! @ South Surrey See more
A quick and easy shoulder mobility check: the scratch test! Can you touch your fingers together on BOTH sides? This can give you a quick idea as to whether or not there are mobility issues lurking below the surface that would be better addressed sooner rather than later. Our bodies are often in the process of accumulating restrictions that we are not fully aware of. If allowed to continue these can eventually manifest into pain and injury. ... Exercise is an opportunity to consistently check-in with our bodies, maintain or progress our abilities, and notice any issues early (and subsequently address them before they can get out of hand!).
Gotta practice what ya preach! Daily life demands (work, driving, stress etc.) can build up tension in the body. It's VERY valuable to stay proactive: maintain mobility and muscle pliability before tension gets out of hand. Here we're performing a self myofascial release technique on the upper trapezius, a very common area of tension. Techniques like this can be invaluable for breaking the cycle of building tension that many of us get caught in!
