Shore Power Main and Testing

Fully Electric 04.09.2020

This 30amp shore power receptacle was completely burnt up. On further inspection we found that the 30amp main shore disconnect was completely charred as well. A quick swap of the shore power receptacle and a return trip to swap out the failed disconnect and this shelter island boat will be back up and running like new.... #fullyelectric #marineelectrical #abyc #shelterislandmarina

All looks good, right? This tandem 15amp breaker seemed fine in appearance... The lights, plugs and microwave (not to code) were not working in this condo that had been subject to a renovation some time ago. After testing the breakers for voltage, this breaker which appeared to be on, was only showing power when wiggled and arced while doing so.... Anyone who knows anything about electrical, sparks and arcing aren't your friend. After inspecting the bus bars of this panel and realizing they had been charred and melted over time, we did a quick breaker replacement in a new breaker spot with virgin bus bars. All is well that ends well. The microwave separation is a story for another day, but lights, plugs and microwave now work without worry. Call us, and we'll use our experience and top of the line tools to make sure you and your home are safe. #fullyelectric

Smart. Mysa line voltage baseboard wifi thermostats. Control from your phone, and easily programmable. ...and a Canadian company.... Swap out your old rotary thermostat and reduce energy loss by 30%. This seems like a no brainers to us.

Playing with a bit of DC today, a little bit of AC as well. Swapping out the ac panel on this 35 foot sailboat and added a full set of lithium batteries. With the amount of wiring that's been pieced together by different owners over the years it was a challenge we were glad to take on. If you've got a boat, or questions about how a boat should be safely wired give us a call or shoot us a message. @ Horseshoe Bay, West Vancouver

We'll be working on this beauty 45 foot sailboat and be convert it to an electric drive. Our first thought was where is this motor coming from and how big does our lithium ion (or lithium iron phosphate) battery bank need to be. 2 things to consider when talking batteries. AGM would come in at a much more desirable price point, but the energy density is almost half. Secondly the discharge of an AGM battery is recommended to be 40-50% depending on brand (carbon foam firefly...s excluded). Lithium ion can be closer to full discharge making the usable energy capacity much much greater and taking up a significantly smaller footprint on the boat. Besides battery type and consideration of the voltage requirements of the on-board electric retrofit motor, which could be anywhere from 12-48 volt, we will either be coupling the house bank with the lithium motor bank with an ACR (automatic charging relay) or simply switching the house bank out and having one bank for both systems. Because we'll be eliminating the "generating feature" of the alternator on the dual diesel on-board motors, shore power will be the fastest and most efficient way to charge the motor/house bank, but it will also eliminate the the ability to turn on the engine for a quick battery top up when at anchor especially when using more demanding loads - keeping beer cold, music going, small appliances and unconverted incandescent lighting going are huge energy sucks when out at sea. That all considered, a backup generator for emergency battery top up will be considered. Supplemental solar will be added, and we'll be looking at a small microhydro turbine to give supplemental charge when the sails are up. Our boat jobs have been limited to only close friends and family, but we'll never turn down the opportunity to get on a boat & put our skills to use. Can you tell we're looking forward to this project? Hopefully there will be cold beer in the fridge when our first week is complete and Friday hits

We like drawing on pictures... We also feel that clear, concise communication is a huge part of our success. It keeps our clients happy, and gives us instant feedback. So many times a phone conversation, text or email can get misconstrued. When what an experienced trades person with over 10 years experience would think would be 'common sense' or quite obvious, to a new home owner, or client who's new to hiring a trades company, it isn't.... We try our best to take the guessing game our of the equation, and time and time again we receive feedback on how appreciated our methods are. We truly believe the simplest things, such as clear communication and planning are the x-factors to completing even the smallest of projects to our clients liking. Here's to more doodling on pictures, more check ins with clients and contractors, and more concise answers to keep our guys and our workflow going in the best possible way. Onward and upward in 2020. Thanks for stopping by and listening to our rants.

Very interesting article on the future of oil as a ground transportation fuel. Interesting as well that short flight companies such as Harbor Air are switching their fleet to electric. "The cost of producing renewable energy has come down massively in recent years, Lewis said. In 2010, the average global cost of solar electricity was $400 per megawatt hour; today it’s $75. His analysis found that already renewable energy is already much more efficient than fossil fuels. A ...one-dollar investment in solar power will yield six to seven times as much useful energy as a one-dollar investment in oil, over the course of the investment’s lifetime." https://m.huffingtonpost.ca//oil-versus-renewables_ca_5d72

How important is it to know your electrical system before you go forward with any electrical work. This hot water tank was placed on a 40 amp breaker. All but specifically rated breakers are only rated to withstand 80% of their breaker rating. 32 amps is what that breaker is rated to run continuously. Without knowing system voltage you could assume 12000w / (240v * 1.732) = 28.86 however, the installers probably didn't realize they were running from a 208v panel, not a 240... volt panel. 12000w / (208v * 1.732) = 33.3096464736188 This number 10 wire needs to be refed to accommodate a 45 or 50 amp breaker.
