This past week, the toddler children have been working on their colours and have shown lots of interest in the Little Fish song. Due to these observations, their educators prepared a colour provocation inviting the children to explore. As they worked an educator asked questions and encouraged the children to repeat the names of the colours expanding on their colour recognition, vocabulary and verbal cues. We also worked on our pre-math skills as we matched the coloured fish to the same colour of boat. Expanding on the children’s interests, we -also lined up the boats in a row and counted how many we had. One, Two, Three, Four, Five! We had 5 boats floating on the water!

Last week the preschool children were very interested in the many coloured leaves falling from the trees and noticed many pumpkins on porches when we went on walks around the neighbourhood . To extend these interests, we brought leaves and pumpkins into the classroom and the playground for the children to explore. Some children were also pretending to plant gardens in the playground, so we looked at the stages a pumpkin goes through to grow and talked about the different wa...ys we use pumpkins: to carve, as decoration, and in food such as pie. The children incorporated baking with pumpkins into much of their play outside . Some children really wanted to decorate pumpkins as well, which led to using markers and glue to decorate foam pumpkins . To extend on the children’s interests in the fall leaves and colours, we explored painting with red, orange, yellow, and green paint, as well as decorating trees with fall coloured leaves . In the classroom, colour sorting and matching also became a large interest this week, so we created a matching activity with square felt and felt leaves to combine these interests. Finally, as we collected leaves, pine cones, and acorns around the playground and neighbourhood, we incorporated the exploration of these different textures into a sensory experience with play dough, with plastic leaf gems, pine cones, and leaf imprints. We plan to continue supporting these interests by opening up and decorating a real pumpkin next week! We hope to continue exploring the children’s emerging interests in the following weeks!

To our 2020 Graduates: Our educators are so so SO proud of you and all of the accomplishments you have made so far!!! While we are sad to see you all leave (especially since it was so sudden and earlier than expected) our hearts are SO full having been able to get to know you and grow with you during time you were here!
