Here are a few simple Serratus Anterior exercises: Scapular Punches (Unilateral) Serratus Push Ups Wall V Slides Banded Wall Slides Unilateral Banded Slides Serratus Anterior is a muscle that attaches to the 1st to 8th ribs at the side of the chest and inserts along the inside border of the scapula. Function: The serratus anterior acts to pull the scapula forward around the thorax. Did you know? Let’s talk injuries. Did you know that there is a SPECIFIC process that our body goes through following an injury? Stage 1: Acute Stage (Inflammatory Phase)... Stage 2: Sub-Acute Stage ( Proliferation Phase) Stage 3: Late Stage (Remodelling Phase) These phases must occur in order for our body to heal. The initial inflammation stage can last up to 72 hours, followed by the proliferation stage where the injured tissues begin to repair. This can last from 4-6 weeks depending on the tissue injury and damage. The final stage of remodelling allows the healed tissue/structures to build strength to respond to higher loads and increase physical demand. It’s a process. And it’s normal to occur, and should not try to stop the bodies natural mechanism. Now, my NEXT QUESTION for YOU. Do you know why after those 4-6+ weeks, you may still have pain, discomfort, etc? Let’s hear some of your ANSWERS!

Getting enough sleep is so important for your body and it’s core functions. ... While your body is sleeping, it has a chance to go into rest and digest mode, a time for your body and brain to recover and reset. Not to mention sleep is essential and so important for your mental health as well. When we lack sleep, it affects our energy levels (obvious, but important), your ability to focus and your attention span, your memory, and also your learning abilities. Creating a nighttime routine that prepares your body for sleep is one habit you’ll want to adopt for the new year. Changing up your routine to something relaxing prepares your body and mind for what is to come. PLANK Yesterday we talked plank. We asked you HOW you plank when you incorporate it into exercise. Let’s teach you some KEY concepts to help you maximize your core recruitment.... If doing an elbow plank, make sure that you stack your shoulders above your elbows to protect your shoulder joint. Keep your mid back and low back straight, as if you had a bar straight across your spine. In order to get this position, do this: Tilt your pelvis posteriorly. Think of it as tucking in your tailbone! And don’t forget to breathe slowly! Breathing is crucial to ensure you are obtaining optimal oxygenation to your muscles and tissues. Give this a try!

Child’s pose is a great way to release tension throughout your back, shoulders, and chest. This pose is a great way to: . lengthen the spine stretch the muscles throughout your back help to relieve stress and anxiety. This pose can be very relaxing and has multiple benefits, give it a try! . In this pose you’ll want to focus on: . Lengthening your tailbone towards your heels Press your hands into the ground Rest your belly on your thighs Allow your forehead to drop towards the ground Focus on intentional breaths Hold the pose for anywhere between 30 seconds and as long as you want/need! When making this banana bread, Ashley left the processed sugar in the cupboard for this recipe and instead it's sweetened with honey! Using honey as a replacement in your baking not only tastes great but also has added HEALTH BENEFITS that regular processed sugar does not. If your SQUAT looks a bit funny with an increased low back curve, or if your unable to reach all the way overhead (like the photo), try this test: . . Latissimus Dorsi Length Tension . TEST: Stand against the wall and perform a posterior tilt with your pelvis so that your low back stays completely against the wall. Lift your arms slowly overhead. How high can you go? 160 degrees? 180? . Positive Test Your low back arches. Negative Test: Your low back maintains its position and you can reach 180 degrees. . ORIGIN: Sacrum INSERTION: Greater trochanter of the femur . COOL FACTS : In a small % of people, the piriformis muscle is pierced by the SCIATIC Nerve. It can also lead to PIRIFORMIS SYNDROME, compression of the sciatic nerve causing pain in the buttocks and along the sciatic nerve pathway. . This muscle performs various duties including 1 laterally rotating the extended femur and 2 abducting then flexed femur. This assists with our weight shifting during walking to keep us from falling. . Try this standing piriformis stretch: . Piriformis Stretch: 3 reps of 30 sec holds Use a wall or chair for balance. Bring one foot up onto the standing legs knee. Sit back as if you are sitting in a chair. Try various depth positions to target the muscles by sitting deeper into the stretch. Wow . . I’m trying to find the words to describe how I feel today. Today is seemingly just an ordinary day, the last day of a long weekend that we are always grateful for. But for me, today is much more than that. .... . Today marks Fundamentals Physiotherapy & Wellness Clinic’s 1 Year Anniversary. We saw our first patient under the FP umbrella today. . . I remember asking my friend Joe about 7-8 years ago questions about opening a clinic. He owns Reactivate Physio in Ajax. He is a great physiotherapist, and a kind hearted guy who wants everyone to be successful. I was so terrified of the logistics - the huge loan, the administrative side - that I never followed through. Did I want to? Sure! But I allowed fear of the unknown choose my path then. Perhaps I was meant to gain more life experience before I took the plunge? Or perhaps I was meant to have my family first? . . . But 1.5 years ago I realized I needed a life change. And I asked myself, do I leave my comfortable job to build another caseload at another clinic? Or do I build a business plan, present it to the bank and ask for a loan? . . I loved my job. But I wanted more. More time with patients, more focus on their recovery and building a genuine therapeutic relationship with them. . . And here we are now, more grateful than ever for the year that has passed. . We started with 1 PT, and now we have 3 hardworking and wonderful PT’s. We started with 1 RMT, and now we have 2 that focus on the client experience. We have 1 amazing head administrator that provides a welcoming experience for our patients and their families. We have 3 part-time PTA/Kin’s that continue to grow and we support their goals and dreams. We have a motivated manual osteopath who has seen success of her profession and wants to help others. We have pivoted our business from in clinic to virtual services when needed. . . What I love about our team is that we are growing together. . . We survived a global pandemic. Because YOU all supported us in so many ways. From booking virtual appointments, to thoughtful emails, and phone calls when I least expected it. . . . I AM GRATEFUL. I AM HUMBLE. I AM THANKFUL. . Yesterday we asked you a question. Was Ashley’s squat a good form or a poor form? . . Knowing proper squat mechanics to utilize your legs rather than your back will translate into reduced injury, improved performance and just improved functional movement. Now we do have to remember there is so much variability in squats - more QUAD Dominant vs. GLUTE Dominant too. Other factors such as joint articulation, joint mobility, overall flexibility and previous injuries all play a pa...rt in squat form. . The Basics of Proper Squat Form: . Stand with your feet a little wider apart than your hip width. Bend at the knees and ankles while driving your hips back. Press your knees slightly outward as you slowly descend. Maintain an upright posture with your chest up and shoulders pulled back. . . Let’s BREAK DOWN her squat and try to help her to improve it! . 1 Her torso is hinging forward because her base of support is so far back, likely because of a few variables. 2 Her shins are stacked, causing her knees to be a above her ankles. This causes her base of support again to be too far back (hence her torso leaning so far forward to compensate). 3 This is the KEY! TESTING TUESDAY . Modified Thomas Test Flexibility Test . Do you experience low back pain? Sciatica? discomfort or a pinching/snapping hip? If so, try this test. Your hip flexor (iliopsoas) is compromised of two muscles - 1 ILIACUS and 2 PSOAS. The TWO muscles are separate but merge together to attach to your thigh bone (femur).
